Greetings Romy. I have two pictures of what I think is a Greater Flameback Woodpecker. I am attaching both pictures which are similar for the purpose of learning if I am doing my PP properly or not. I prefer the landscape over the portrait because of the background giving a better picture of the surroundings. Am I right or wrong? I have done a color calibration on my computer and would also like to know if the lighting & colors are correct or not. Thank you for your kind attention. Raw for landscape image. Post process of landscape image. Raw for portrait image Post process of portrait image.

Wow.... your colors and highlights/shadows are now spot on, Ely.... what a night and day difference! I bet your previous photos (processed before calibration) now look too bright. ;D
I too prefer the portrait version, although there's really no correct or wrong way to crop it, everything depends on how the photo will be used.
For large prints, we can perhaps include more of the environment for added interest. Hence the landscape version will be nicer. I'll crop more loosely though than as presented to give a bit more space above for the bird to look up to. The nice thing about a 21 MP capture is you can crop it down to as small as 8 MP and still be able to print 20"x30" with excellent feather detail.
For web posting, your portrait version rocks - perfect colors and sharpening is just right. We can't do much about the blown sky, but I wish there was an out-of-focus tree in the BG to reduce the dynamic range of the scene.
Great capture, Ely.... much better than any shot of this species I managed to get so far.

Gee whiz Romy. Thanks a lot. The color calibrator really works. If you remember the first time I met you in person you were already telling me about it. Not knowing any better, I said that is the last of my priority. All I wanted was to take good pictures and that should be my top priority. I don't know if you have noticed, I always listen to your suggestions and adhere to it. Now everything has work out to improving the IQ of the picture that I take. Salamat ulit sa lahat. What is your next advice? I am going to share this picture at the forum so people will know (not that they don't) that if they want to learn they should ask the "Maestro".
