I've been busy with trying to recover my file on my crashed Buffalo 1TG external HDD for the past few days I've been in home. I tried several software if there is still hope in recovering the files. The HDD is still recognized by the computer but the drives are not showing. I tried the EasyRecovery Professional software by Ontrack and it seems to be able to see the HDD and the files. When I tried to recover the raw files the program changed the file name and extension to a .tiff. It's good I can still open the file in PS, what a relief!!! Since it's in tiff there won't be any lost details. The only problem now is how to retrieve the almost 500gb of data I think there's no way around but to buy another 1TG HDD to restore all the data into it. After restoring the data into the new HDD I would then be able to send this defective one back to the store since it is still covered by the one year warranty. Is there any other programs anyone might know on how to go about with retrieving data on a crashed HDD? Here's one of the raw files converted to tiff that I found worth posting. Crested Pigeon ( Ocyphaps lophotes) - Broome, WA, Australia July 23, 2008 40D + 300 mm f4 IS + 1.4x Kenko TC, f5.6, 1/1000, ISO 200, Manual exposure under available light, Hand held, Raw capture. Wasted a lot of time on this and missed several good weather birding oportunities.

Wow, amazing bird nicely captured! Yes, sometimes data recovery software will put *.tiff extension in recovered RAWs, but the RAWs can be converted just the same. If you have Rescue Pro that comes free with Sandisk CF cards, it might do the job. Some info about Rescue Pro www.lc-tech.com/software/rprodetail.html

sorry about the crashed drive but man, that bird rocks! (pun intended) i experienced the same with the office 500gb hard drive and had to get a pro data recovery consultant to recover the files from it. not sure which software they used though. and yes.. had to buy a new drive as well..

Great dove with a mohawk hairstyle! If you dont mind, dont bring your defective harddisk back to the vendor. It is worth trying to experiment on that thing after you have transfered the files to a safe place and master the art of data recovery. Who knows you might stumble upon a great solution one of these days and if this thing happens to any of the PBPF members in the future, your experience and knowledge on data recovery will be priceless and very handy. But of course, the idea of having a replacement is really a temptation.

Woohoo!! I was resigned at loosing all the files in the HDD that crashed, I used the EasyRecovery Professional software by Ontrack, I just let it run for several days until the numbers won't move anymore. Didn't realized it recovered a lot of files that I thought was lost in cyberspace already. Here's one of the photos that always bothers me and I was having nightmares, seeing this picture in my dreams thinking I've totally lost it. Just happy to have recovered it and my drive to go on a sortie seems to have returned. ;D

Yes... yes! yes! Hope really springs eternal... and patience is a virtue, a must virtue for bird photographers.
Congrats, Neon, for the recovery of hidden wealth, este files... wealth nevertheless!
