The GH1 has all the features we want in a birding HD videocam - articulating LCD, full manual exposure control, great audio, 2x crop factor and AF (including continuous AF) during video recording. Unfortunately for us birdshooters, there are not many long lenses available at the moment for the micro 4/3 mount. Likewise, the IQ is still much better with the 5D2. This will be great for butterfly imaging though. It's good that Panasonic came out with this revolutionary DSLR and in the process set the video bar higher. Either Canikon will be forced to upgrade their next models to at least the same standard, or more long lenses will be available in the new mount. Either scenario points to very exciting times ahead in bird imaging.

Here's one for bird close ups. vimeo.com/groups/gh1/videos/5013649I'd say that this will be a good back up or my 40D and 30mm F4 will be the back-up? My son who is into docu. films can't wait. lyd

check this out..... cool! reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=31203but for us birders........ quote from the dpreview website.... In addition to LUMIX G lenses, the LUMIX DMC-GH1 and LUMIX G Micro System can use any interchangeable lens that complies with the Four Thirds standard via an optional mount adapter. so given this..... can one can then tap these zuiko lenses??? zuiko 90-250 f2.8 translates to 180-500 f2.8 zuiko 300 f2.8 whoa!given 2x crop factor.... a 600 f2.8 would certainly do wonders! and... and.... what about the sigmonster 300-800 f5.6 which translates to a whopping 600 - 1200 f5.6!!!! and... and..... what if you add a 2x teleconverter to the zuiko 300 f2.8 which then translates to a 1200 f5.6!?!?!? or do i stand corrected?

IIRC, the micro 4/3 mount can accept a regular 4/3 mount lens via adapter and AF will still work. M4/3 will also accept virtually any lens for 35 mm or larger format with the use of appropriate adapter but MF only.

Manny, I don't suppose you're an Olympus fan. =B) Too bad about the EP-1, there's no battery grip!

hehehe...... not really but somewhat awed by their advancements. if not their previous dslr's IQ ratios and ISO ratings, i was considering Oly before i jumped into Nikon. the micro 4/3 form factor is really something very interesting too. Oly's Zuiko glass being top-notch too, its something worth considering for me

wow very promising..
i recently bought a Sanyo Xacti HD2000 which does 1080p/60fps capable of around 600mm equivalent in 35mm terms. haven't tried it yet for birding though... but the quality is really good for a budget full hd video cam. it even does 600fps high speed shooting. but at a reduced frame size.
