Hi, Sylvia and I just came back from 5 days of birding in Sabang, Palawan. Lots of birds, some of which we are not sure of the ID. Can the forum experts help us out? This bird was taken near the airport in Puerto Princesa. It has two lines under the eyes and looks like a sunbird. The back of the bird has a purple colored patch. Red eyes. Bird number one: This is another bird. It also looks like a sunbird. It seems to be a female. Maybe a Plain Throated sunbird? Bird was photographed near Puerto Princesa Airport. Bird number 2 This last sunbird had purple markings on the throat and a small orange mark below the purple. It looks like an Olive-backed sunbird aurora that did not have all the colors come out just yet. Or is it another kind of bird? Bird was photographed in Sabang. Bird number 3 Thank you in advance.

After a lot of surfing the net I think bird number one is an immature Plain Throated Sunbird. The second bird is a female Plain Throated Sunbird. And the third bird is a male Olive-backed Sunbird aurora in eclipse plumage or an immature bird.

Palawan sunbirds are tough ID jobs, perhaps Ivan can help confirm your IDs. Nice shots, Tonji!

No confirmatory help from me for the first two, but I have the same guesses as Tonji. I think the red eyes on the first two sunbirds are indicative of Plain-throated SB, but as I have not seen the Palawan race of P-t SB, I cannot be certain because all the Plain-throateds I've seen have had a buff-colored throat while these have a yellowish tinge. Last one, I think is also an immature male olive-backed sunbird since you can still actually see some molt in the wing and the color pattern is likewise consistent with that bird. It is quite cool to see how the throat and chest color pattern starts from the middle and extends sidewards upon maturity. Great shots!

Hello Tonji, Even with the harsh lighting condition it looks like Brown-throated sunbird (aka PTS) to me. The last photo should be an immature/sub-adult male OBS (ssp. aurora). Thanks. Red, buggy eyes, and strong bill with little decurvature when talking about Sunbirds, means genus Anthreptes. Only one Anthreptes ranges in the Philippines.
