Wow, city starlings.... the closest to Metro Manila I've seen these birds is at Caylabne. I wonder if this is a record for Manila?

First time I heard they're in Manila, too.
In Davao and other Mindanao cities, they're everywhere. But somehow never (before) in Manila.

A pleasant surprise and made your day too. Is this fruit tree called "Bignay"? Or what is it called? It seems to be the favorite of a lot of birds, making it my favorite too. Heh heh heh.

No that is not a bignay tree. The leaves are obviously different. I dont know this tree in the pic though. What I do know also is that it is one of the most popular trees for birds

Starlings.. they give me the creeps! Specially the asian glossy ones with their red eyes.. yiiiihhh!!!
having them so close to Manila is a welcome treat but makes one wonder why they are so close. I hope they were not "forced" to migrate to Manila and leave their former homes in the wild.
The last time I saw sooooo many starlings was in Zambales. It was at the last rest-stop of Victory Liner of the Olongapo to Dagupan route. There I swear the outnumber YVBs.
The pics are a welcome surprise.. thanks for sharing Ron

They are recorded in Manila regularly. They frequent more the Manila area, sometimes roosting in the high billboards of Mayon, Dapitan area. Not as many in other cities like Cagayan de Oro and Davao though.
As for the tree, I forgot the name but I think it is the same tree as the one in Ely T's avatar, the favorite fruit of Lowland White-eyes here in UP Diliman. Prop Jerry knows the name of the tree.

First time I heard they're in Manila, too. In Davao and other Mindanao cities, they're everywhere. But somehow never (before) in Manila. I've reported sightings of AGS (nesting even) at Intramuros and UP-PGH back in 2003 (WBCP bird records) and so this should not be a new record for Manila. Good close-up shot!! Thanks and regards, Nilo Cebu, Philippines

We have two giant balete trees in our perimeter here in Paco and when it fruits (twice a year) some of the regular visitors are the AGS. I have seen them in Manila Zoo as well (outside the cages).

Yup! I've seen them too at the Philippine General Hospital some years back. They used to roost and nest on drain pipes at the back of the Nurse's Dormitory. You'll also see juveniles. Not sure though if they are still there. Another location where I saw them lately (at least before I left the P.I. ) in large numbers is at the Festival Supermall in Alabang specifically within the Alabang/Zapote entrance where they roost at the back of the billboards on the face of the building. You'll also see them occasionally in other areas. They usually nest at cavities on top of wooden electrical posts.

hello, I was in the middle of the street with the sun blazing overhead when I took those shots. Some neighborhood folks was looking at me like I am a weird guy because I was standing there for a long period. When I show them the pics, they too were very surprise to see the pics.
