Tonji, Tina and I went birding in the golf course last Monday thinking we would see the same old familiar birds. Instead, it turned out to be a very rewarding day because Tonji and I had a lifer .. and a RAPTOR at that! We also had additional Alabang photo lifers that day (Pacific Swallow and Large-Billed Crow) and photographed 2 kinds of very big turtles and even a bayawak (Monitor lizard) stalking a pair of White Breasted Waterhens! Just when you think you know what to expect from a familiar birding area -- you experience the unexpected! iso 250, f8, 1/250 iso 250, f8, 1/4000 <-- this setting was WAAAY off, had to "rescue" the pic Sylvia p.s. Tonji is STILL grumbling because he wasn't able to take a pic. I wasn't able to call him right away. He was far from me and I couldn't see him. Tina also didn't get to see it, but anyway a few months ago she had one fly over her house while clutching a fish!

Whoaa, that's a great BIF catch Sylvia. Tonji must be very dissapointed missing this wonderful opportunity. By the way are you sure the shutter speed is 1/250 or 1/1250 because if it's the former this is very unusual, no blurs at 1/250, the Raptor must have been gliding very, very slowly.

Thank you Tina, Paolo, Rey, and Romy! Rey -- I double checked and the speed really was 1/250 in that first shot! I was taking photos of a pair of Golden Bellied Flyeaters on a tree, when i looked up and saw the Osprey right above me and SO close! It looked like it was hovering above me. At first I couldn't believe it really was a raptor, but just started clicking anyway! Tina -- THEN, I looked back to call Tonji, but I really couldn't see him!

Wow and that made it even more fantastic. Freezing a BIF at 1/250 is almost a miracle for me. Congrats Sylvia and my symphaties to the "birding buddy" who missed it.

Great shot Sylvia. Joking aside... Its great to see a new bird in Alabang and even better to photograph it. We have seen 49 species. After yesterday the count is 45 species photographed inside the village. I should have taken a few snaps of the bird. But I thought I could get closer with the golf cart but it flew away too far and fast. Lesson learned: small bird in the viewfinder is better than nothing. Good thing Sylvia is quick on the draw!
