Tonji and I see this reddish dove-looking bird in Alabang a lot. I thought they were Red Turtle Doves, until I read I read Romy's remark in Ppaaoolloo's post about the color of the undertail coverts. Are these the same bird in these 2 sets? What bird is this? The pics were taken at different places in Alabang. Set A, January 2009, golf course Set B, February 2009, park

They are indeed Red-Turtle Doves (Streptopelia tranquebarica). The reddish bird is the male while the other is the female. ;D

I'm not very sure of the etymology of the name of the turtle dove but I can only guess that it is probably a dissimilation of the Latin name turtur (turtle-dove), which is based on its call. Let's wait from the ornithologists that are also members of this forum. They might be able to give a better explanation.

same explanation from the Internet; www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/610486/turtledoveThe use of the term turtle in this pigeon’s common name is derived from the sound of its call; the bird has no association with shelled reptiles. thanks very much[/quote Yeah, it is because of the purr ... purrr, sound, and it says in one article I read that it would sound kinda weird if it was named purtle dove... turtle dove sounds better, but turr... turrr... is kinda weird naman. There has to be a better reason. tely:Ds
