This is the third year I have spent the early mornings of January 1 in Trees. The last two times, I chanced upon Felix and Orly. But this time, I found myself birding alone with a gloomy weather and thick mist. (but I loved it, so cool). The pair of cuckoos is from Trees' big tree. The rest were from all over UP including Irri, Dairy. These are (forever) docu. shots with a short lens. Subjects are too far and backlighted, most taken from the car since it was drizzling most of the time -so many excuses tee-hee. Brush cuckoos? Copper Smith Barbet Immature Brown shrike? Little Egret? Blue Rock Trush??? A dozen or more Yellow vented bulbuls Canon 40D 300mm USM IS handheld with Tamron 1.4 TC HAPPY NEW 2009 to me and to you all! telyds

Those are, I think, mature Chinese goshawks and not cuckoos. Good for you as it is not often that anyone sees goshawks perched together. Happy New Year!

Tend to agree with PropJerry on the ID. Can you post a closer view so we can ascertain?

The birds are extra fluffy, they look like they're trying to stay warm and dry! I'd guess Cattle Egret for the egret pic .. the beak is yellow and the legs and feet are black.

Shawks! My first uttered wish for the New Year was I wish all you guys were there. Ah, Mastah, the 5d video would have been perfect. The couple sat there for an hour, the smaller one flying out and then coming back the same place to join the other. Maybe I will just buy myself a Canon SX1 and a spotting scope (2nd uttered wish). I wonder how that will perform Syl. lyd

I wonder how that will perform Syl. lyd I don't think the Canon SX1 will work for digiscoping since it's a 20x zoom. According to the digiscoping cd that came with my scope, in general, for a point and shoot camera, 3-4x zoom works best.

Wow, TeLyds. Had I know visited Makiling, I should have tagged along. I was in Los Banos that day but spent the day inside the house because of the not so good weather. Happy New Year.

MARK, haay naku. i thought about you. Sayang. Next time I have that inkling, I will text you. I only told Orly, Felix and Tina (Lord, please make Tina well so she can go out and shoot the lovely birds you made!) Syl, I really envy your captures. Maybe the Sx1 is good enough for videos. I will wait a couple of more months. I llike the Pinoy's reviews. Nestor . That's your 300mm on 40D now. I still need to push myself to bring a tripod. Are you back? Thanks Martin, Mark, Nestor, Rey, Neon, JP, Prop, Syl and Ka Mastah for the comments.
