After a not-so-fruitful stakeout of a fruiting Balete in La Mesa, packed up and drove back on the trail, when a male Spotted Wood-Kingfisher flew by and perched on a limb nearby. Hit the brakes, slowly backed up about 10 meters, opened my trunk, dug up the camera and lens, attached the two, then crept towards old Spotty, hoping he was still there. He was! Click-click-clickLight was too low. Handheld shots useless. So crept back to the car to get the tripod. Crept to Spotty, fingers-crossed. He's still there! Click-click-clickShutter shake. Crept back to the car to get the shutter release cable. Crept back to Spotty. Still there! Installed the cable. Click-click-clickMaybe, if I raised the tripod (didn't have time to fully extend the legs), better eye-level shots. Raised it. Spotty stayed. Click-click-clickA bit of a glare from light through background foliage. Moved a bit to the right. Spotty stayed on. Click-click-clickMoved closer for full-frame. Spotty stayed! Click-click-clickTwisted camera for portrait orientation. Moved even closer. Spotty stayed! Click-click-clickStarted dancing with joy. Spotty stayed! Click-click-clickSang and danced "It's Not Unusual" ala Tom Jones. Spotty stayed. Click-click-clickWhat a way to end the year! COOLNESS Ding !!!! Congratulations BIG TIME !!! Looks like Spotty fancies you ;-) Superrrrr happy for you. Would have been nice to end the year with fantastic shots like those but alas .... I'm ending the year with a very bad cough and have to content myself with looking at the four corners of our room Happy New Year !!!!

Wow congrats on a full frame capture of a beautiful Kingfisher Ding. The story is almost as nice as the capture.

Thanks, everyone! And a Happy New Year to all.
Tina: Consider the sniffles a blessing: best time to stay in your room tonight when the whole of Manila will be engulfed in gunpowder smoke. Bet you'll be fit and snappy (snapping?) by tomorrow!

The best, Ding, the best year ender... and it is alive! Congratulations! BTW, the other day, I spotted 5 elegant tits in Boso-boso. Funny names. They are feeding on something from the tall tree on the road going down to the river (Flor's, not mang Teddy's bridge). Easy to shoot, but too far for my lens. Lyd
