Yesterday, I received a text message from our operations control station at Balara that an eagle was electrocuted when it stepped on a wet tri-phase high voltage wire. The bird literally exploded. All I got from the guard who cleaned up the remains were two feathers which, unmistakeably came from a Philippine Serpent-Eagle. I had been happily following the life of the eagles of Balara. At one point, I counted two adults and two juveniles. Still have not found out if they breed in the area. They have been a source of joy and wonderment for our Balara operations people. The guard said two adults were about to perch on the wire when electricity arced and killed one while the other flew away. I wonder if we'll ever see eagles here again after this incident.
