Oops, I mistakenly deleted the first paragraph of this post when I added the shooting details. Anyhoo, I did a UP sortie and met up with Prop Jerry and Jenny. I got me 2 lifers, the Male Narcissus Flycatcher and the Grey-streaked Flycatcher. A also got a better shot of the Philippine Nightjar. Doc Chito and Raul were able to capture the Furtive Flycatcher. Male Narcissus Flycatcher (Ficedula narcissina) D700, MF, Tripod, 200-400mm, 1.7xTC, 550mm, f/8, 1/250, 800 ISO Grey-streaked Flycatcher (Muscicapa griseisticta) D700, MF, Handheld, 200-400mm, 1.7xTC, 650mm, f/8, 1/2000, 800 ISO Philippine Nightjar (Caprimulgus manillensis) D700, Live View-Tripod, 200-400mm, 1.7xTC, 650mm, f/18, 1/8, 800 ISO Pied Fantail (Rhipidura javanica) D700, MF, Tripod, 200-400mm, 1.7xTC, 650mm, f/8, 1/50, 800 ISO

Congrats TJ.
Your setup deserves some lifer, and MORE.
D700 and 200-400 ... astig! ;D How is it with the 1.7? Some says a 1.4 will do.
Happy birding!

Thanks Ted! The 1.4 is known to be the best performing TC vs. the 1.7 and 2.0. But the 1.7 is also known to be the best compromise. I like using this set-up (even with the D200 and D80 before) to get the extra reach and decent IQ. I use the 1.4 if the light is really poor. I'm still getting used to shooting without a 1.5x crop factor.

Since I didn't capture the Furtive Flycatcher, my parting shot was of a winged creature of another kind. I still was using my long lens set-up. D700, MF, Handheld, 200-400mm, 1.7xTC, 650mm, f/8, 1/125, 800 ISO

Don't be afraid to use ISO 1600. I bought a used 1.7 as well, just to try it. I like using it for the added reach, a little softer though. Still saving for a bigger glass, but nobody knows when that will happen. ;D Enjoy man.

... and the Tagiades skipper butterfly from the Hesperidae family. That put a smile on my face, TJ. Do it more often. Before you know it, you have a new gallery. Lots of cheers, telyd.
