Did a brief sortie at Subic yesterday..... very few birds but I got close to this strange fellow. It resembles a White-throated Kingfisher, but where is the white throat? 40D + 500 f4 IS + Canon 1.4x TC, 700 mm, f/5.6, ISO 1250, 1/100 sec, manual exposure in available light, bean bag: Ahhhh.... the white throat is so tiny that it can easily be concealed by a head turn. Here's the same bird with a tiny shaft of sunlight piercing the canopy and illuminating its face area. White-throated Kingfisher ( Halcyon smyrnensis) 40D + 500 f4 IS, f/4, ISO 320, 1/100 sec, manual exposure in available light, bean bag: And a photo with the bird fully in the shade: 40D + 500 f4 IS + Canon 1.4x TC, 700 mm, f/5.6, ISO 800, 1/80 sec, manual exposure in available light, bean bag:

Wow! for a possibly new species, you already nailed a great shot of it! If ever, have you thought of a name for it? Romyoconus smyrnensis perhaps? edit: oops, it's the same bird pala... haha! you got me there!

As always superb control of the light Ka Mastah!! Even the bill that was hit by direct sunlight only a strip is blown. If you didn't put the shooting details who would think that the first one was shot with such high ISO!! amazing!!
