We travelled 130 miles (one-way) just to look fo this bird - our 86th lifer for this year. Thankfully we were not disappointed despite a discouraging start. (please see story at http://ornithographer.blogspot.com) Yellow-billed Magpie (Pica nuttalli) 30D, 100-400 @ 400mm, ISO-400, 1/200, f5.6, handheld My wife's version (we used the same equipment - I borrowed her gear - I didn't have time to get mine from the car ;D) 30D, 100-400 @ 400mm, ISO-400, 1/160, f5.6, handheld

Congrats on the lifer. Nicely captured I might say. Nice BG and low.
From what I read, we have those two in the area. Some people report sightings once in a while.
By the way, can't see any birds from the link.
Thanks.

Congratulations Bob and Cynthia. I'd say the bird is friendlier with Cynthia. It even posed for her. telyd

I like the low angle shots. The colors and exposure are spot on They're worth all the almost 300 miles

Wow.... both great captures, nice job on the exposure (a nightmare to tame, considering the contrasting colors), congrats Bob and Cynthia!

I travelled 2 miles to look for the bald eagle I saw last Monday, but not successful. I was in for a pleasant surprise, as a flock of Yellow-billed magpies are foraging near the entrance of a regional park close to my daughter's home daycare. Didn't have a chance to park the car, so I stopped the engine and fired away while still seated. Luckily, there's no other vehicle entering the park. These are endemic to a few areas of California, specifically the valley, as they don't migrate. Luckily, there's some in the Sacramento area. Tough to nail the exposure, thanks to post-processing. ;D Yellow-Billed Magpie Pica NutalliNikon D300, AFS 300/4, TC 1.4, 420mm, 1/800s, F/6.3, ISO 220, handheld.
