I want to know how the onboard flash of the 40D would work when there is need to use it when available light is not enough to get a decent shot. Looks like its good when you are close enough to the bird, around 5m. Figbird - Female ( Sphecotheres viridis)40D + 300mm f4 L IS + 1.4x Kenko TC, f8, 1/400 sec, ISO 400, Hand held, manual exposure, on board flash, RAW capture, Full frame

Haven't seen a Kookaburra in a long, long time. Reminds of this song that my nieces would always play and sing to when we were there visiting them. Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree Merry, merry king of the bush is he Laugh, Kookaburra! Laugh, Kookaburra! Gay your life must be
Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree Eating all the gum drops he can see Stop, Kookaburra! Stop, Kookaburra! Leave some there for me
Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree Counting all the monkeys he can see Stop, Kookaburra! Stop, Kookaburra! That's not a monkey that's me
Kookaburra sits on a rusty nail Gets a boo-boo in his tail Cry, Kookaburra! Cry, kookaburra! Oh how life can be Nice captures Neon !!!

That's a blast!
I knew I recognized that voice. Used to sing to my kids: "I love you, You love, We're a happy family...."

Was there a "steely eye" that you just fixed in post processing or is the photo as is? I usually get the steely eye look when I use on-board flash at that distance.

They're gorgeous pics, neon!! Thankyou!
I have not seen a Blue-winged Kookaburra yet, but we see the Laughing Kookaburras every day because we feed a family who `own' our house:) They are so different to other Kingfishers. They are not shy at all, and will happily eat from our hands. We give them a mixture of Minced beef and insects, which they love:) I have been so grateful to know their family, and watch their babies grow up each year. There is no sound as infectious as a group of Kookaburras laughing like maniacs.
The Bush stone curlew shot is extraordinary- I have never seen one better! It looks like a very young bird.
Thanks again neon- beautiful pics!
