posting of birds here. These are imported, direct from California (Sacramento). ;D Two samples of my very first birding shots with my D300, with a rented VR 80-400/4.5-5.6D. All handheld. Since I got interested in birds, I decided to rent this glass, to see if I'm going to like it. Basically I'm just testing it, and I think it performed well beyond my expectations. I was able to save some keepers for web viewing (not printing yet). I eventually ended up with a 300mm f/4, plus a TC for added reach. So here they are, I suck in PP, any advice will be highly appreciated. EXIFs in the images. These were captured last March. I'll post more images later, taken with the 300/4. Right now, the migrants are gone and only the summer birds can be seen.

Nice shots of cute birds, Ted.... perhaps a tad more USM is needed.

Nice shots of cute birds, Ted.... perhaps a tad more USM is needed. Minimal PP has been done on these, not even NR. I applied some USM, if I remember it right 50,5,1. The second one I cloned a distracting branch. Any suggestions for sharpening? These are really soft, my first time to use a long lens. And I'm surprised the images came out good as these are all hand held, maybe VR really works. I posted my first, and will post my images in chronological order, to show how I progress on my shooting techniques. My avatar is from last weekend though ... yes, we do have wild turkeys roaming around, even on some business areas. But that one was taken from a park. They hide comes Thanksgiving. Yay!

Another one, from the same day as the above images. Just a gull, but this ring-billed is in migration (nothing can be seen right now). With the sun about to set, I had enough light to get a proper exposure to avoid blowing out the highlights. By the way, I forgot to note in the image was captured using ISO 200. Critiques, comments, and advice are welcome.

BIF! And here he is again ... in flight. Forgot to change the ISO, so I can up the shutter speed. Oh well, lesson learned.

Rey, we have several wild turkeys around the area. Not a lot, but you'll see them once in a while. In fact I just saw one this week, a female. I usually see them in flocks, with at least one tom (male). Some prefer to stay in the public parks most of the time.
They look yummy, but the meat might be as hard as a rubber. ;D

Here's another one, taken from the same location as the above images. Just the right place for me to try out the rented VR 80-400. Tried to take a BIF with this guy, but I'm not successful. Details in the pic ... oh it's hand-held by the way. Slightly bigger, if you care: www.tedscorner.com/pbp/CanadaGoose8x10web.jpgRegards, Ted

Another one from the same location as the above captures, same day, with the rental VR 80-400. Sun was about to set, not enough light, and white balance was way off. These coots are very tough to capture, nailing the exposure the first time around is pure luck. I failed to verify my shutter speed on this one, it's way low to my liking. I should have bumped the ISO so I can get a decent SS. It turned out a little soft. I know better next time. Exposure and WB were tweaked in CaptureNX. The mosquito was having fun with the ride. (bigger version) tedscorner.com/pbp/American-Coot-8x10-web.jpgC&C welcome. Regards, Ted
