Turkey VultureCathartes auraSacramento, CA (American River) Saw this beast while scouting another site for birding, I parked my CR-V on the side of the small road (inside a regional park), and leaned on it and started shooting. The lack of experience showed, as I didn't turned the engine off. Bummer! I thought I got at least one that'll be a keeper, but when I downloaded the images into the computer, I was really disappointed. If only my 300/4 has VR (that's IS for Canon users, or OS with Sigma). it might have saved the day. Anyway, this is the most decent I can process. Nikon D300, AF-S 300 f/4 with TC 1.4 (420mm), 1/1250s, F/8, ISO 800, handheld, raw capture, cropped approx 33%, slight adjustments in CaptureNX and CS2. Comments are welcome. (image updated)

A sinister looking bird, Ted! Yes, you've to remember to turn-off the engine when using any part of a car for support.

These are not so bad at all, Ted.
I had a similar experience also, and even with the Canon's IS turned on, the images still came out blurred. We'll just have to learn from experience. ;D

My very first time to get a shot of this bird was in Northern Oregon (Lincoln city) last spring. It was HUGE!! I was just getting into birding, I thought it was an eagle ;D.

These birds are huge. Nikon D300, AFS 300 f/4D + 1.7x TC, 500mm, 1/500s, f/9, ISO 200, tripod support with gimbal head Found an area with lots of vultures, you don't want to look sick or tired! Not sure if they're using this as a rookery or they just happen to be there when I saw them. Nikon D300, AFS 300 f/4D + 1.7x TC, 500mm, 1/400s, f/9, ISO 200, tripod support with gimbal head
