Welcome to the forum Jonathan Wonderful first post. Looks like we are going to be treated with a wonderful variety of Australian birds - I'm already looking forward to seeing more of your posts. The noisy miner sure has a funny looking set of eyes ;D Just curious, why is it called a noisy miner? Does it make noisy sounds like a woodpecker?

thanks po! ;D yeah! they're super noisy especially late afternoon where they group together in the trees and make a raucous. their chirp is sharper and louder than your average chirper.
i'm starting to think "Miner" is a misnomer for "Myna", whichever came first. just correct me if i'm wrong. do they belong to the same species?

hehe.. yeah, used flash on some shots..
so is it a common practice/guideline for birders not to shoot with flash as much as possible?

some feathers are best exposed without flash.. for example that of a kingfisher

Noisy Miner Size: 24-28cm Aaahh, look what america did to me, I'm having problems with my metric system. I have to do conversion to visualize the size. ;D (ok, that's about 9.5 to 11 inches, or approx a quarter of a meter) Looks like a bigger bird than I originally thought. Nice capture. Any tech details on this? Thanks.

thanks, Ted! hehe, yeah the metric system in terms of centimeters still confuses me. i still think in inches for short lengths, and meters/kilometers for long distances. LOL! i've updated the tech details of the first post and added a few more photos.. here's an additional shot of this bird. i didn't realize i've been taking quite a few photos of the same bird. they're all over the place! ;D taken March 8, 2008 with a Tokina 400mm + 2x TC f/5.6 (f/11 effective) of my friend. 1/500sec ISO 800 handheld. sorry for the poor compo.. ;D
