It was a reasonably successful outting with the 300 2.8 IS - I was mainly testing its BIF capabilities on the 2x TC and was pleasantly surprised how fast it focused. If you're after a portable birding Prime and can't afford a 500 or 600 then I don't think you can really go past this lens, especially with its ability to take TCs. Here's a few from the Sunday field trip: Little Tern - 1DMk3, 300 2.8 IS, 2x TC, 1/3200, f6.3, ISO400. Magpie Goose - 1DMk3, 300 2.8 IS, 2x TC, 1/640, f6.3, ISO400 Whistling Kite - 1DMk3, 300 2.8 IS, 2x TC, 1/800, f5.6, ISO640 Brown Falcon - 1DMk3, 300 2.8 IS, 2x TC, 1/1250, f5.6, ISO640 Egret with Fish - 1DMk3, 300 2.8 IS, 2x TC, 1/1250, f6.3, ISO400 Happy birding and cheers! William

Oh, please, stop! You're making me drool and dream that I can somehow save my lunch money (for a few years) for this.
Awesome shots!

All excellent shots with the 2x TC, Will! With such great IQ of the 300, I don't think you'd need to strain your back with the heavy 600. You can send the 600 to Manila and we can dispose of it in an environmentally safe manner for you, no charge at all to you.
