Hey all, I took my hour old 50D for a test run this afternoon and so far I'm impressed with its IQ, speed and AF performance. Here's a few samples, all approximately 65% crops: Brown Honey Eater - 1/1000, f8, ISO 320, 300 f2.8 + 1.4x TC. Rainbow Bee Eater - 1/400, f11, ISO 640, 300 f2.8 + 1.4x TC Striated Heron - 1/2000, f5.6, ISO 320, 300 f2.8 + 1.4x TC Little Pied Heron - 1/800, f6.3, ISO 640, 300 f2.8 + 1.4x TC Caspian Tern - 1/1250, f5.6, ISO 800, 300 f2.8 + 1.4x TC Cheers William

Very nice captures, Will.... looks like the 14-bit files process nicely. Looking forward to some crops later.

Thanks Romy, it's a bit of a pain at the moment since ACR doesn't support the 50D RAW files yet. I'm using Canon DPP to process these

Here's a 100% crop unprocessed only converted from RAW to JPEG. 50D, 1/400, f11, ISO640, 300 f2.8 IS + 1.4x.

Whoa! That 100% crop is amazing William. Lots of details and noise is great.
Thanks for posting it.

Here's a 100% crop unprocessed only converted from RAW to JPEG. 50D, 1/400, f11, ISO640, 300 f2.8 IS + 1.4x. Looks like the 300 2.8 + 1.4x is still outresolving the 50D sensor. I suspect the bare 500 f4, 600 f4 and 800 f5.6 would do the same by a good margin too. However, adding a 1.4x TC to the latter 3 would bring the lens and sensor resolutions closer (I suspect the said lenses + 1.4x will still outresolve the sensor by a narrow margin). I'm not sure though with a 2x TC, which can become obsolete on the next reduction of size of pixels. Eventually, with small enough pixels, TCs will become redundant harvesters of excess naked lens resolution. Thanks for the crop, Will!

Congrats on your new toy, Will. Mine to be delivered first week of Oct. Can't wait to try it on the field. By the way, I got a new toy(lens) for my 5D, the 24-105L IS F4(for portrait and landscape) from Tin Cheung Camera of HK and a 1.4x Kenko TC for my 600 F4. Happy Birding and avian shooting to everyone.
