recently aquired this lens and had my first shoot with it inside a church event. lighting was very poor but the 2.8 f stop helped a lot. i love the bokeh on this lens Nikon D300 + Nikkor 70-200mm f2.8 vr; 200mm, 1/160, f4, iso 1600

Gosh ... you're a tease. It's available recently at B&H, and I've been contemplating on getting one. But I have to pass on it for now.

Congrats on your new toy, JP. That's the lens every Nikon user wants in their arsenal. ;D Very clean images at ISO 1600 too. Gotta save up for a D300.

Prrr ... I already made a decision (that I hope I won't regret). The reason I'd like to get one is for the upcoming wedding we'll attend. AND, will be perfect for the humming birds in the backyard. Unfortunately, due to limited resources, I think I have more use for the VR 105mm Macro. I'm finding it slow as far as AF is concern, but it's doing it's job the way I intend it to. It's great for macros, and mid tele for some portraits. But ooooh, I really like one. I guess, I'll concentrate on the 500 VR for now. The 70-200 will be great for macro too, either with tubes, or close-up attachment like the Canon 500D.

For those from the Canon world, the 70-200 USM 2.8 also has a legendary reputation. I have the non IS (non-VR for Nikonians) and I love everything about it: sharpness, saturation, bokeh... Perfect for my kids' soccer games, recitals and concerts.

There's a new version of 70-200 f/2.8, and it's now a VR II. From what I read so far, aside from having the VR updated, the optical formula is different. Though it can be used in full-frame (FX or film) bodies, the original 70-200 is designed for use on DX (crop) bodies. The new design, based on the MTF provided by Nikon, is now sharp even at the edges even on FX bodies. But the thing is, it's US$500 more. The price of the old version will definitely plummet once the new version starts shipping. If I can snatch one for a good price, I "might" jump on it. The retirement fund I'm expecting from my previous employer is in danger .... hehehe.
