Went to Subic for the first time. Thought I was lost trying to get to Hill 394. Tall grass has overtaken much of the road. Getting on the trail was impossible. All shots were crop-to-deaths but probably lifers. Gotta get me a 600mm! Can someone help me ID? This is probably a Dollarbird This one was perched near the Dollarbird but can't make out what it is. This one's probably not a crow (yellow eyes). Or is it? A Green Imperial-Pigeon? Can't make out what raptor this is. Looks like a Phil Serpent Eagle but the wing pattern's different. In a dark trail, tried stalking a family of three woodpeckers and all I got is this ISO1000 crop-to-death. Any idea what it is? BTW, saw three Racquet-tails fly by separate occasions but they were too fast for me to catch. It was also fun listening to them. They all sound like a rusty swing or gate.

Hi Ding,
First two are dollarbirds. The birds with yellow eyes are bar-bellied cuckoo-shrikes. You're right with the green imps. The raptor looks like an immature Philippine Serpent Eagle. As for the woodpecker, it is a Greater Flameback.
The trail to hill 394 has been overgrown for quite some time now. I don't think a lot of people hike up that trail anymore.
Congrats on the lifers!
Adri

Thanks for the IDs, Adri!
Tried going into the trail but, silly me, forgot to bring my machete. Grass was up to my neck so gave up.
I will surely be back to that place and I know now what to do so plan to get closer shots.

Agree with Adri's ID, Ding.... good that you made it back from an attempt at Hill 394..... I've never been successful in reaching it, because my 4x2 always gets stuck along the trail.

Ding, you finally made it huh? To aid in ID'ing, do you have an estimate as how big/small the crow-look-alike was?

Ding, you finally made it huh? To aid in ID'ing, do you have an estimate as how big/small the crow-look-alike was? The crow-look-alike was definitely smaller than your regular crow. Probably more like the Dollarbird but not as erect. I think I agree with Adri and Romy that it's a Bar-bellied Cuckoo-Shrike. Thanks!

Thanks! Hi Ding, Does it look like this? William, that to me looks like a male Brewer's Blackbird (of course, depending on the geographic region). Ding, the reason I ask, is to check out the Kennedy book (I don't have one) if there's something like a smaller crow in that range. The bill looks like a crow, and to me it looks like black (I'm color-challenged too), and if it's smaller than a crow, it could be a grackle as it has yellow eyes too, so check it out. But if it's a lot smaller than a crow, then it looks like the blackbird that William posted. I'm not familiar with shrikes yet, so can't comment on that.
