I'm just curious.. how do you pack your camera gear particularly when boarding a plane (either domestic or international)? Especially if it is quite bulky (as in a 500 mm lens). Hand-carry or check-in? Regular luggage or camera-specific (like Pelican)?

Bob, we normally hand-carry whatever we can. Only the tripods are checked in. Camera bodies are separated from lenses and stored inside a small hand-carried bag along with some clothing, while the lenses are carried in the original lens bags that they came with.
I don't have a 500mm Canon, but it's definitely safer to keep it with you at all times. :-)

I use a Lowepro Lens Trekker 600AW to house my 500 f4 + a mounted body when travelling by plane. The 100-400 + another body are in a Minitrekker AW. The Sigmonster is only used when travel is by land and/or sea.... at least until PBP has its own Learjet... ;D Romy

So this Lens Trekker 600AW (same as mine) is allowed to be hand-carried? Don't know really the exact dimension of a bag to be hand carried (international/dom. flight). What I know is you're allowed two. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

My gear goes into a Kata R103 backpack. Fits everything plus a laptop. Good protection.
Tripod gets checked in. The darned Manfrotto gimbal head is always a problem. It gets stuffed into my clothes.
