Sorry Unnamed Buddy, but I'm just too excited on the arrival of your new birding glass...... one with a humungous 150 mm front lens diameter. That of course translates to an f/4 aperture if used naked at 600 mm, or f/5.6 at 840 mm (with a 1.4x TC), with stabilization.
Can't wait for your first photos out of that monster! ;D ;D ;D

Heard about this too. A monstrous Howitzer will soon be a part of the birding hardware in PBPF. I hope the person will be kind enough to let me try a few salvos. Pssst.... here's a plan, Rey...... we do our best to be in the friendliest terms with the glass owner's spouse, so that when the long-shooter is away, we can borrow/sneak out the howitzer. We then erase the EXIF of our pics (replace the data with that of the 400 5.6 or 500 f4) so that when the person sees our posted pics, no suspicion is raised, mwuahahaha...... ;D

If you're talking about who I think you're talking about, then this talked-about-person has a bad knee and should not be carrying such heavy load! I would, therefore, in the spirit of true friendship offer to occasionally swap my 400mm with him as I care too much for his health.
This person also lives close to where I live so I may even offer to store this lens in my dry cabinet while he's away! Of course, long-term storage is not ideal for such lenses so I will even go so far as taking it out on weekends to exercise its moving parts.

All those services at no charge at all, right? ..... because the long-shooter is our friend. Hehe..... I'm gonna put a 5-digit karma number under the person's avatar just for being allowed to serve alternately with Ding. ;D If you're talking about who I think you're talking about, then this talked-about-person has a bad knee and should not be carrying such heavy load! That's why I love this group!! Not only are they my friends but really thoughtful ones at that!! ..he he he I have this monster for a day already and could not even give it a go...my mind was wondering the whole day how this lens would function. Now that I'm home manage to shoot it and find out how it works. Since picture tells a thousand words, I'll let the pictures do the talking. Will post it as soon as can download it.

This is all I can say..AF is lightning fast!! once you press the shutter focus is locked up already with the 40D body. AI servo is as smooth as silk... Here's a trial photo of some fruits..no birds already when I arrive home..No PP just convert raw to jpeg and the 100% crops. 40D + 600 mm f4 IS, f5, 1/60 sec, ISO 800, Av priority, AI Servo, RAW Capture, Manfrotto 055PROB, 393 Gimbal head. 100% cropped 40D + 600 mm f4 IS, f5, 1/15 sec, ISO 800, Av priority, AI Servo, RAW Capture, Manfrotto 055PROB, 393 Gimbal head, Remote Switch, Mirror Lock-up. 100% cropped will do some field test at Hardin tomorrow..don't know exact time yet.

I'm still seriously thinking about the 500mm, if I let Wency carry that, even a 500mm will surely be out of the question !!! HehEHehEHhehEhehe

Saw the test shots.
What!!!! That's all it can do!!!
You got conned!!!
Tell you what. Since my 400mm obviously takes much sharper and more saturated photos than that, I'm willing to swap it for your 600mm. And that's because you're a friend. Take the deal now before I change my mind.

Neon, I can help you field test it tomorrow ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Just like Ding, I just really want to help you out knowing na your knee is still hurting. You really shouldn't be carrying such a heavy lens !!!! So that you don't get tempted to carry it, I will do you a big favor and just take it home with me ;D ;D ;D

Hi Neon, It appears that the crops are softer than I expect from the 600 f4 (I downloaded these and applied some USM)..... it seems the focus in both shots locked on the rear of the fruit. Try to do the battery test if the 40D is autofocusing right. Here's a 100% crop from my 500 f4 at wide open, hand held, with USM (WB is not right, just look at the detail). Crops from the 600 f4 should be similar in IQ if the focus is spot on. EDIT - I just saw that the shutter speeds are relatively slow, specially if there's wind to shake the subject.... that can also cause the softness.

Congrats Neon on your new toy! Sir, you need a good balance to hand hold it .... do we see a 1D series in the future? The 40D is too light and small for that lens.
