I finally found time to rationalize my home connectivity, and hied off yesterday to Park Square I to get me a wireless router. I run a couple of internet connections at home - a 1.4 Mbps 3.5G mobile internet (which I use at home and in the field), as well as a 384 kbps DSL service. The router I got was a cheapo TP-Link TL-WR340C (54M), which set me back PHP 1.5K, with free set-up tutorial from the store tech guy. It has 4 LAN slots, plus of course unlimited wi-fi connectivity, though each connected computer has to share the 384KB band width. Set up was a breeze, and I got several laptops and desktops connected well (with network security) and running simultaneously in a few minutes. Now, my lungs will go bust even earlier..... I don't smoke indoors, but wi-fi allows me now to surf in my garden, with unlimited coffee and mentholated lung-busters at my side. ;D ;D ;D To my fellow birdnuts who're using DSL but not wirelessly connected yet (if there's still any), a wireless router is cheaper than ever, and almost as easy to set up as shooting in P mode.

hahahaha I thought your post has to do with radio freq propagation causing cancer.
In Vancouver, when you signed up for DSL service. they give you a wireless modem. Some are are a breeze to set up but there are some that are not user friendly. I think in our case, the internet provider does not want the users to be monkeying around with the settings.
If I may make one advise. We get distracted how easyly the wireless router to set up. sometimes we forget to enable security. Please make sure to enable security so that no one can piggy back on your bandwidth. @ 384 kbps you don't want to lose anymore than you have to.

Great advise, Jun.... most wi-fi enabled devices (laptops, desktops and mobile phones) are set up to search for a connection by default..... quite easy to lose a chunk of one's small bandwidth to neighbors.

Yep. Installed a wireless access point some months back and my family's been happy since. Can't recall how much I spent but I did get one that was dirt-cheap at CDR-King. Just had to do some fiddling with IP address allocation so that my router/switches won't collide with the access point.

It's amazing how many people do not read their manuals. They buy the router, go home and plug it in. When they see that it's working. they leave it at that, without finetuning the settings. Out here it's common to find an open network. Some people have gone years without paying for internet service because of this reason. I believe this is due to the fact that most people are getting a minimum of 1.5 to 3 mbps service so they do not noticed too much of a drop in their network so they are unaware that they have a network parasite ;D and who looks at their router log report ? ....wi-fi now allows me now to surf on my garden, with unlimited coffee and mentholated lung-busters at my side. ;D ;D ;D Coffee and cigarettes....a lethal combination! Cheetos & Coke (soda) are also lethal combo ;D ;D ;D

Well, getting a free wireless Internet access is an issue... BUT sharing a logical drive/folder with all those personal files in the wireless network.... Indeed! ey guys ... be careful with connecting to those open unsecured wifi. it may be free internet for you (how nice that can be right? ) but it might be some kind of a honeypot intended to lure you to use it so the free WIFI operator can scan your network traffic. if he gets lucky, he might be able sniff around your web mail login and password, or some useful information about you, especially if you keep on using the net unsecured. worst, if your PC or laptop is unsecured (e.g. no firewall, having shared folders, open peer networks), he can readily take control of your PC without you knowing it.
