Testing out my newly acquired used TC 1.7 with the 300/4. Not bad at all, better than I expected. Using it with the 300, I can now have a reach of 510mm (but camera is only reporting 500mm), but the max aperture is now f/6.7 (1.5 stop from f/4). Needs very good light to AF (auto focus) at all. This is full frame, no cropping done, just the raw converted to jpg. White balance is off though. 1/60s, F/6.7, ISO 200, used a flash (can't remember if built-in or with the SB-800), handheld Forget about the shallow DOF, just look at the body. It's softer than the TC 1.4, but it's still ok. Here's a bigger file (exif intact): tedscorner.com/pbp/Hummer%20TC17%20Test.jpgWhat do you guys think? ~Teddy

The larger version has decent detail Ted, looks like a very useable combo.

Detail looks good Ted! Is this a Nikkor TC? Martin, yes it's a Nikkor, a TC17EII. Bought it used recently, from Thom Hogan's assistant (Tony). Though I used flash, I think the above sample is not fair, as the shutter speed is so low. There might be some blur due to subject movement or some camera shake. Here's another test shot from last saturday. Nikon D300, 300mm f/4D, TC 1.7, 500mm, 1/500s, F/8, ISO 200, Manfrotto tripod and gimbal Resized full frame: www.tedscorner.com/pbp/Hummer-TC17-Test2.jpgNot as sharp as the TC 1.4, but still usable. And not bad, considering it's used. I paid only a fraction if bought new.
