Hello, I am new on the forum. I am fairly new to digital SLR photography. 6 months now. I have a Canon XTi/400 and bought a Canon 40D which I have had now for 2 weeks. I bought the better beamer for taking photos of birds with my 400 F5.6 lens. I have the Canon 430 flash. My question is what settings do you use for the Camera and 430 flash to get good results with the Better Beamer at like 75-100 Feet. Thanks if you can help with some settings. This is a very nice forum.

Welcome to the forum Iloco!!
I personally don't have a flash and just use natural light to shoot birds. Just post any queries you have and surely some of the masters here got the answer to your questions.
I think you just have to play around with your settings to get it right, no two situations are the same. Just shoot and review your capture and adjust accordingly, hopefully the bird wasn't scared away by the flash. My two centavos.
Cheers,
Neon

Cheers, Neon I echo Neon's advice... each light situation is different so you just have to experiment, and here, the histogram is your best friend. To minimize the "red-eye" effect, mount the flash on a bracket. The larger the separation of the axis of the lens from the flash's line of fire, the less is the red-eye effect. At far shots though, even a tall bracket will not make a significant difference. I personally shoot only in available light. That said, you can avoid the flashed look if you use the flash only as a mild fill-in light to expose a bit more detail in the shadows.

Thanks for the information. I been playing around with the flash and find if I set my flash lower than 50mm I get better fill flash using the better beamer.

I often shoot with the BB, depending on the light and whether it is very backlit. Generally I opt for -1 to -2 FEC as fill flash, as the others said you need to consider the flash eye effect that is very common if your flash is not far enough from the lens, especially if the subject is a fair distance away. Only way to know is to keep experimenting
