One early morning this week, I explored the wetlands outside Hangzhou, Fujian Province, China, in a wooden boat with a skilled and quiet oarsman. It was very good birding and a very relaxing and enjoyable 2-hour cruise, and surprisingly no mosquitoes. Little Grebe (Tachybaptus ruficollis) Little Grebe (Tachybaptus ruficollis) - immature Black-Crowned Night-Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) with dragonflies Black-Billed Magpie (Pica pica) - Not a good snack though Long-Tailed Shrike (Lanius schach) – I note that the crown is light gray, whereas the crown in LTS in the Philippines is black. Unidentified bird, but it runs and stands on the ground like a Robin. I saw many around the wetlands and in the city parks. Canon EOS 7D, 400 mm, hand-held.

Sounds (and looks) like an enjoyable boat trip. It's interesting to see the variation you mentioned in the LG's in the UK and China.
