I was in La Union a few days ago, away from the polluted skies of Metro Manila. The night sky was so clear that I got inspired to bring out my birding lens and try capturing my first nebula without the aid of a tracking mount. The 500 f4 IS is indeed a versatile piece of fine glass.

Thanks, Bobby, Mark and Rey! Incredible imagery Mastah, how did you find it. It was an accidental find, Rey. I was taking a wider field exposure of the starry night sky with the 5D2 + 100 2.8 macro (great lens for astro stuff because of the good IQ edge-to-edge and brightness). When I zoomed in at the camera's LCD to check focus and "star trailing" movement, I noticed this bright cloud-like spot which appeared in all photos. I quickly mounted my 500 f4 and took some shots. I knew then it's a nebula but it took me a while to ID it when I got back to Manila.
