The Team was able to photograph three species of Kingfishers but I personally was able to get only one. I missed the Rufous Lored which most of us were able to catch except me. Anyway, I'm quite happy with what I've got because this is one of my primary targets in this sortie because not only it is an endemic but to me it's one of the most beautiful of the Kingfishers, of course second only to the Indigo-banded. Silvery Kingfisher (Alcedo argentata), PICOP Bislig City, 8/27/2010 EOS 7D + EF500 + 1.4XTC, @700mm, f5.6, 1/80, ISO 800, Manual Exposure, Handheld

Rey was not able to get the Rufous-Lored Kingfisher as he was busy stalking the Trogon, and by the time he finished his hunt, the Rofous-Lored is no longer around. Such was always the case, if there were many birds in the area, especially when mixed feeding flocks arrived, each one of us has his own target species, it's like a guerilla war encounter where everybody shoots at an enemy closest to him/her or of his/her choice. But if there's just one or few birds around, expect a firing squad from us all focused on that single target. The Rufous-Lored Kingfisher always perched at high branches. It seems that it's the only kingfisher that perched high above. Rufous-Lored Kingfisher Halcyon winchelli, Bislig City, Surigao del Sur, August 27, 2010 Canon EOS 50D + EF 300mm f2.8 + 2X TC + Benro Half-Head and Tripod... 1/250, f/5.6, iso640 But when this kingfisher faced us, all of us laughed as we saw in it a White-Collared Kingfisher! ;D Rufous-Lored Kingfisher Halcyon winchelli, Bislig City, Surigao del Sur, August 27, 2010 Canon EOS 50D + EF 300mm f2.8 + 2X TC + Benro Half-Head and Tripod... 1/400, f/5.6, iso200 It took us several minutes to scan and rescan a pond-creek before we found the Silvery Kingfisher, another endemic like the Rufous-Lored. It's hard to find this guy as its black and white colors blend with the colors of water with black sand-mud and crystal reflections. I was looking for the orange boots (orange feet and legs), but couldn't find them as I realized later that it was sitting on them, hiding them from view. But eventually we found it, and it was a massacre! Now I am really feeling the regret of not staying with you guys. I should have gotten my Rufous-lored KF too instead of a colorful headless Trogon. Anyway, such is the grim realities of birding, ;D but the upside to this is that I have a good reason to come back.

We saw a lot of Doves and Pigeons in Bislig. Among these are Pink-necked Green-Pigeon, White-eared Brown-Dove, Amethyst Brown-Dove, Yellow-breasted Fruit-Dove, Pompadour Green-Pigeon, Green Imperial-Pigeon, Spotted Dove, Zebra Dove, Common Emerald Dove and Mindanao Bleeding-heart. Some of them just flew in our midst while we were looking for other birds. Here are two species which I have decent pictures: Pink-Necked Green-Pigeon Treron vernans, Bislig City, Surigao del Sur, August 27, 2010 Canon EOS 50D + EF 300mm f2.8... 1/1250, f/2.8, iso640 Amethyst Brown-Dove Phapitreron amethystina, Bislig City, Surigao del Sur, August 27, 2010 Canon EOS 50D + EF 300mm f2.8 + 2X TC + Benro Half-Head and Tripod... 1/50, f/5.6, iso640

When I first read the thread, I was happy that the PBPF members were invited to visit Bislig. Now I'm excited to see what they've captured. When bird guides talk about its steady destruction and the loss of its beautiful inhabitants, I could not help but feel hopelessness because very few people have heard and witnessed its treasures.
With these appetizing images, I hope more people get out there to experience what Bislig has to offer. More often than not, it takes outsiders to open the eyes of the locals of the beauty in their own backyard.
Mabuhay kayong lahat and please keep those photos coming!
