We've seen the 2010 Super Teles and the pricing are... mind-boggling for good reason. With that in mind let us talk about the most popular super tele prime used by many talented bird photographers in the Philippines: the EF 400mm f/5.6L. It is a good long lens that disgustingly easy to hand hold but lacks two things: Image Stabilization and Weather Sealing. Which is odd as it is most likely used outdoor. So what if tomorrow Canon announces a EF 400mm f/5.6L with 4-stops of IS, weather sealing, weight reduction of 28%, improved build quality, improved image quality, closer minimum focus distance & other improvements found in the 2010 Super Teles would this be worth P97,900-103,500 ($2,175-2,300). Price assumption is based on the pricing strategy of Canon for the 70-200 f/4 vs 70-200 f/4 IS & 70-200 f/2.8 vs 70-200 f/2.8 IS II. Also for those curious the 500mm f/4 IS is the second most popular lens on PBPF. Including the 500mm f/4.5 & Nikkor 500 f/4 VR would put it toe to toe with the EF 400mm f/5.6L

I got my 2 pound "rice" bag already Poor man's IS for only 150 pesos. It works. I would only upgrade to an f4 on my next purchase if ever my pocket is rehabilitated.

I am planning to keep the 400 f5.6.
I think the prices of the new stuff is pretty crazy.
My problem is not with my gear. Its the rain, I hate it, its making me lazy. Can't wait for the rain to go away!!!

I'll keep my 400 f5.6. After using it for several months now, I learned and managed to take decent photos in difficult light situations such as rain forests, even without IS. And I agree with Tonji, that the prices of recently released lenses are way beyond the reach or ordinary mortals like me

I love my 400/5.6 L although I wish it had stabilization, weather sealing, and a closer MFD. If money is no issue, the lens with these upgrades (including IQ and weight reduction) would certainly be worth taking a look (considering the price above). But then if I could spend such amount for a lens, I might as well wait a little more and save up for a few extra millimeters and a stop of light

That would be nice. But at those prices, I'd stick with my old one. However, for one just starting out in bird photography, it might be a very attractive lens. :-)
