I will be going to Northern California for a few weeks and will be based in Lake Merced near San Francisco. I will be helping my daughter move to her place and will be helping her settle down. I should eventually have lots of free time so I am bringing some photography gear to keep myself busy. I hear Lake Merced is a good birding area, which is great because thats where I will be. I have lots of time to explore and will have the use of a car so if anyone knows of good birding spots in North California please tell me. I am thinking of bringing the 500mm f4, 1.4x tc, 100-400mm, and a 24-70mm with two 5D mk2's. I will also bring a 580 flash. Any suggestions with regards to birding areas, equipment, clothing etc. will be welcome.

Thanks for the feedback guys.
I just found out my visa just expired! Just as I was booking my flight. Boy, I am becoming forgetful. Looks like I will have to cancel my trip for now.
Ah, oh well there is always next time.

I think the last time I went to Yosemite was 10 years ago. It was super nice. Its hard to book the Wawona hotel. Best to do it now and hope for the best. When I went I think there was a months long waiting list. We just got in because someone backed out.
William is right. Yosemite deserves a few days at least.
