We are planning on going to Chiang Mai, Thailand. I am thinking of doing a little birding maybe in Doi Intanon or in other places in Chiang Mai. Planning on just using a smaller set up maybe a 5d or 7d plus 100-400 rig with monopod.
Does anyone have any birding tips for the area? :)y

I did some birding in Chiang Mai just outside the hotel early in the morning. There were Mynas, Doves, and Sunbirds right in the city if the tree is right. Nothing fantastic. I did not try to bird in the forest as we has a schedule to follow. Lumpini Park in Bangkok is a nice place to bird. You won't miss the giant Monitor Lizard. There are lots of them swimming and walking in the park. Funny the policeman stop me with my 300mm lens but when I showed the bird picture on the monitor they understood. Probably thought it was a grenade launcher or the like.

He was also our tour guide (not birdwatching) when my friends and I visited Chiang-mai. Great company!! If you are interested, I can forward to you his e-mail address. Name is Peter. telyds

Thanks Ely and Lydia for your replies.
We just got back from a pretty long 9 day trip to Thailand. Phew.
Amazing birding. I just used our smallest rig the 100-400 and a 5d mk2. No tripod or monopod. But I am happy with the birds I got in the short time I went birding. Next time I know what to do and what gear to bring and the conditions to expect.
We met some Thai bird photographers. Super nice guys, very helpful.
I will post some pictures in a bit.
