Most of us know each other by our real names, but some of us still use handles or nicknames in this forum as well as in other forums. I know Martin uses speedmonkey, Ding - balarila, Rey - mantarey, and others have their own handles too.
Handles/nicknames are of course useful when one needs to have a unique identity in a net forum and still remain relatively anonymous. I'm thinking it would be fun to know the story why each of us has adopted such nickname.
Let me start - I call myself liquidstone at DPR, FM, POTN and other forums because my bread and butter is concrete technology. Fresh concrete behaves like a liquid, but becomes as hard as or even harder than stone when it sets and is cured. I kinda fancy word combos, ala firewater which the American Indians call alcoholic drinks many years ago. ;D

Me too, me too. There are 3 "jerrries" among the De Villas (all relatives): one is known for his fraternity antics, another is a Department of Education official known for being a member of the 3rd gender, and I am the third one (I have fairly recently been told there is a fourth one, apparently a young kid). To avoid confusion and since I have been called by many "propesor" where I do volunteer work (I am an Associate Professor), I have come to use this nickname "propjerry" to distinguish me from the other Jerry De Villas.

I usually call myself tariktik when I don't want to use my real name. Actually, my email address registered in this forum is tariktik@..... I guess for some it is obvious but for those who do not know, tariktik is the local name and pronunciation of the Tarictic - a small hornbill with the most species found in the Philippines.
I really don't know why I picked out tariktik among other bird names but it has always been a discussion starter whenever I give out that email address to somebody who is not into birdwatching. ;D

my nick came from a mistake really, i was about to type my email on the nickname textbox during registration. That's one funny story. It happens to me once in a while during registrations too. I hate it when I populate the wrong line while filling up forms. ;D Having said that, I asked Romy, the admin , to delete a duplicate profile as I have mis-spelled it. Anyway, mine's boring (can't think of any). It's a combination of "avian" and "fanatic" ... avianatic. That's all there is to it. ;D

Lydia, Ate Lyds, telyds is the butterflywatcher. Yep, I am the one butterflywatching during a birding sortie. If there are no butterflies, I shoot birds. That explains, too, why I do not frequent waterbird habitats. Ako'y taong gubat. I still have to find another butterfly nut in the Philippines. I am hoping that one of these days, a predator will metamorphose into a serious paro-parozzi. I started with macro and increased to 200mm. Then, I got myself a 300mm and will not be tempted to get a longer one ever. In a butterfly-less day. documenting birds, especially in remote places is worthwhile. My advocacy is to promote bird and butterfly watching to build awareness in the care of the habitat. Now you know why I am always in the company of birders- walang makasama for purely buttefly watching eh. That's the first reason. Second- it's so much fun to be with the PBP members, there's warm fellowship and maraming baliw. telyds PS. And tell me.. who does not want to be identified with Romy Ocon? Just telling people "magkasama kami nyan" sa group is like wearing hoopoe feathers in my hat. Kahit hindi (pa) ako magaling magshoot.

Although I use my real name here, I use two different handles in my other blogsites. 1) tenderstorm - an oxymoronic play on "thunderstorm" which connotes the two sides of my personality. ;D 2) ornithographer - combining the first half of ornithology -the study of birds and the second half of photo grapher - one who takes pictures, thus a photographer of birds.

I wish I had a more profound anecdote. But here it is:
I love to read (though haven’t found much time for it lately) both English and Pilipino literature. So, while on one of the first websites I was registering on, I thought I should be creative and use as handle the Pilipino word for “Literature”. I recalled then that, back in high school, we had a Pilipino subject “Balarila at Panitikan”. Quickly, I typed in the word “Balarila” on the name field.
I later realized my error: “Balarila” meant “Grammar”. Should’ve chosen “Panitikan”. On subsequent websites, I didn’t use “Panitikan” anymore as I didn’t want to have to memorize different names for different sites. The error stuck. Behold the accidental Balarila.

Although no one seems to agree with me on that. I may be Balarila in the forums but, in the company of birders, I always introduce myself as Romy Ocon.

Hehehe.... interesting stories, folks! To confess, I actually used the handle "flowerpecker" in Pacland, a forum dedicated to Pacquiao. hahahaha ... r u one of the pacnuthuggers there mastah? Mine is taken from the nick I got since birth. Well i guess almost every first born baby boy in ilonggo speaking provinces are nicknamed 'toto'. My real name though is glenn. I started using totogamboa when i found out that there two guys online with the same name. First one is a hollywood/entertainment news writer, that has been using glenngamboa for quite sometime. If you google the name, the first 10 pages of google would list down all the showbiz/entertainment articles he has written. The 2nd i think is into drugs hehhehe. I think he sells drugs. Fortunately, not the illegal ones. I think he is some kind of pharmacist. Once in a while I get emails from people in the narcotics and entertainment news world. heheh. I tried searching who is using toto gamboa and seems there is no one so i tried as much as possible now to be known as toto gamboa in the online world.

My hubby is from Peru and I'm from the bukid. It sounds similar to paro-parungbukid which is butterfly in the vernacular. I'm a lurker in this forum preferring to ohhh and ahhh in private. ;D

The most powerful code-cracking machines used by intel services wouldn't crack mine. ;D
I started using my handle -- a mere concatenation of my first name and first letters of my middle and last name -- several years ago when I created one of my first email addresses. Since then I've been using it (although I haven't been active with joining forums before). Over the time I've actually had several attempts creating a different universal handle but the words I pick usually have already ended up on someone else's account, and I didn't want to use suffices like numbers (e.g. username12) to "get" the handle. So there, I decided to just use my original handle, perhaps until some cool word comes into my usernameable words vocabulary. ;D
