A friend asked me to ID but I would like to a second opinion and using my newly shipped Kennedy Guide ^_^ narrowed it down to the Barred Honey Buzzard.

Paolo, it will help the ID process if we mention the location of capture. My best guess is it's a Spizaetus cirrhatus in a plumage intermediate between light and dark phases.

The KG says the Spizaetus cirrhatus ranges in Mindanao, Palawan, Mindoro, and some other smaller islands in the vicinity. I wouldn't be surprised if it turns up in Leyte too. Let's wait for a concurring or dissenting opinion.

With it's long crest, I would hazard to say that it's a S. philippenensis

Am leaning towards Philippine Hawk-Eagle too. Maybe in transition between immature and adult plumages? A possibility also is a Barred Honeybuzzard steerii Will look at it more closely later.

It is a beautiful shot! Was that taken in the wild? Or is this a domesticated eagle? I remember photographing a B. Kite in Palay Palay under the care of the DENR there. You can get vey near it. I have seen 2 raptors in Biliran, Leyte under the care of the Governor. They were purchased from locals who found them in the wild. It is a common thing in our country to find Eagles as pets. telyds PS. Is it ok? No, it's not. We have to educate the locals not to catch...just watch!

Many thanks for the ID. I am unsure if the bird is domesticated. Will ask when I get the chance. Both Gov Petilla's are friendly people. The current gov loves the ocean.

Posting the confirmatory email from Tim Fisher:
Hi Romy Did you clear up the ID of the raptor already. It is a Hawk-eagle because of the feathered tarsi which Honey-buzzards do not have. It is Philippine Hawk-eagle because not only the plumage but because of its long narrow crest from to top of its head. It belongs to the smaller race " pinskeri" which is not illustrated in the book but is smaller than Luzon race and is paler with barred lower underparts. Tim
