Dear All:
This is about the U.P. Vargas Hall museum exhibit on birds of the Philippines proposed for this September (2008). This has been proposed and scheduled last 2006 by then curator Prof. Anna Labrador, later proposed again by the next curator (Prof. Helen Rivera) and now being followed-up by the new curator, Prof. Butch Herrera.
First, I am now asking if anyone is still interested; we need no less than 30 photographs for the exhibit this September, best if more.
Second, I am asking if the exhibit can be launched this September or needs to be postponed for next year; note that this year is the Centennial Year of the university.
Third, for those willing to participate, would you need funding for the printing and the framing?; if you do, I would have the unholy obligation to look for funding for it within the very short period of a little over a month.
Fourth, for those willing to participate, would you like to sell your photograph (not necessary)?
I am meeting the curator this coming Thursday to discuss if this exhibit is pushing through; actually, the university has already reserved this month for us since last year as part of the Centennial Celebration (the university authorities simply visited Idol Romy's site; no commitments yet, Idol Romy, so do not worry).
THOSE INTERESTED, PLEASE ADVISE ME AS SOON AS POSSIBLE VIA MY MOBILE PHONE (0920-923-3263).
Offer for the publication of some book(s) by the university is expected if the exhibit is successful, i.e., guide to birds of Q.C., guide to birds of U.P. Campus in Diliman, guide to birds of U.P. Campus in Los Banos.
Yes, this is my fault bring the matter up this late.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely Yours,
propjerry

Hi Prop. Jerry, Neon has undertaken to collate all the UP Birds photos and they are actually posted in one of the threads. Maybe a gallery of 100 BIRDS OF UP, can be exhibited from the different members who are willing, especially those who are graduates of UP and those who has made UP their bird-watching turf. Maybe simple matted frames can minimize the cost so that 100 birds can be exhibited. They do not have to be in 1 size. I don't think 100 photos will be difficult. We have more than 10 photographers frequenting UP. They difference shots of the same birds but the skill, artistry, diligence and passion make them worthy of being displayed at the VARGAS Museum for the 100th celebration of UP. I am not from UP but I have three kids who are from UP. If there is committee that will undertake, I am willing to be a part of it. C'mon guys, if you do not support this, Prop Jerry will set up barricades. It is a good venue for EB. Also, we can highlight the need to protect the UP environment from indicriminate land development - Hardin ng Rosas included. CALLING NEON!!! You are a true maroon-blooded PEYUP. telyd

Many of these are ready, exhibited during Kusina Salud's Earth Day program. Each is a different species, but most are not UP birds.Third, for those willing to participate, would you need funding for the printing and the framing?; if you do, I would have the unholy obligation to look for funding for it within the very short period of a little over a month. No need for funding for mine as I'd print and frame these anyway, but I suggest a modest framing/printing budget be raised for other photogs, if possible.Fourth, for those willing to participate, would you like to sell your photograph (not necessary)?I'm open to sell signed prints. ;DOffer for the publication of some book(s) by the university is expected if the exhibit is successful, i.e., guide to birds of Q.C., guide to birds of U.P. Never tried printing my photos yet. Will try to reprocess some for printing. What would be the minimum size for the prints? How do we frame it, what is the standard way of framing? Is there a format for the text on the photos? Please post a sample framed photo so that we could standardize the presentation.

(305 mm x 381 mm) paper size, printed on Kodak Pro Endura Paper at JT Photo, matte finish. Layout - with a thin black border on two sides, and a broad border on the other two sides that contain bird and shooting information. Landscape Sample: Portrait Sample: Here are some framed ones on my wall: Our prints need not be standardized at 12x15s, you can go 8x12, 8x10, 12x16, 20x30 or even 24x36. I guess the best arrangement is to hang these grouped by photographer.

Thanks Mastah! I'll start reprocessing some of my photos for print.
Is the black border included in the print size?

Is the black border included in the print size? Yes, the print size includes the black border. For a 12x15 paper, the actual photo size is a bit smaller. I create a template in PS (black BG and text), and just paste the photos onto this.

Hi Romy,
I can volunteer two of my bird photos taken in U.P. just this year (1 taken outside of Vargas Museum), if it's worth including in the exhibit. They are already framed A4 size. For additional information, I've taken my MTM in U.P. - graduated 2003.
Thanks

If somebody can "champion" the event (volunteer as a project officer), we can even make this as a formal first exhibit of PBP photogs. Remember, we have a PHP 10K seed money from the Kusina Salud affair. I'm currently busy on other things, so I can't spearhead the project, but I'd certainly assist in whatever way I can.

Good point Ate Lyds. September is also BirdFest in Palawan. Might create conflicts in schedule. I know that Master Romy is also a regular exhibitor in the previous Bird Festivals.

I think PBP will not set up an exhibit in the Bird Festival this year. I have attended some meetings and heard that the Palawan WBCP network will be the one to source the bird photos. I don't know if anyone from PBP has lent them Palawan birds photos. There are a couple of pictures I am borrowing for the "SAVE THE HABITAT" booth under the Butterfly Society featuring birds, butterflies and the habitat. I wish I have a couple of Palawan birds eating fruits or perched in good vegetation. I only have Neon's predator bird. The rest are butterflies. tel Scheduling the UP exhibit towards end of September will give us more time to prepare. There should be a meeting with Prop Jeri to discuss the nitty gritty of the proposed project. telyd

I'm from UPLB, but I don't have UP bird photos yet since I got to start the hobby after I graduated and since then I haven't had the time to visit the alma mater (or other campuses) to take bird photos. Nevertheless, I'm willing to offer any form of help that I can for this project.

Here is the news from the meeting this afternoon at Vargas Hall.
1. The exhibit, with everyone's permission, is pushing through. 2. The targeted date is September 4 to October 5. 3. The venue is the first floor ("The Edge") exhibit hall. 4. The title of the exhibit is "Bird Season: 100 Birds for 100 Years of U.P." (Preferably but not necessarily birds from U.P. Diliman and U.P. Los Banos areas; We drop "100 Birds for 100 Years of U.P." if we do not make the 100 mark.) 5. U.P., unfortunately cannot sponsor the cost except for the venue; U.P., however, can make recommendations (I lead the hunt for the sponsors). 6. The exhibit is, with everyone's permission, going to be billed as a Philippine Bird Photography Forum exhibit. 7. The exhibits are not going to be sold and are to remain as properties of the participating members.
Others details I am bringing up once we are able to meet, hopefully next week.
So far, we have enough volunteers for the exhibit barring complications from the National Bird Festival participation on September 11-12 in Puerto Princesa, Palawan; if this festival complicates matters, we can open the exhibit September 15, a Monday (The exhibit is sandwiched between the exhibits of Nonoy Marcelo works which may have to be extended a bit if we open September 15 and the Amorsolo collection).
I have three questions: First, should we go ahead with the exhibit? Second, should we accept the terms laid out so far? Third, when do we meet?
I need everyone's reaction.
I can organize the work force and, if needed, get the sponsors for footing the costs so that everyone's concern are only the exhibits.
By the way, U.P. is asking Quezon City Office of the City Administrator to help bring in the public, publicity and all, over and above U.P.'s efforts.
Cheers!

I'd like to join! I rarely print my photos and, when I do, I just do it at home with my home printer using whatever paper I can get from National. So, printing will mean an expense for me. I don't really mind the expense but it would be a waste if I printed a photo and found out that someone else had a much better shot of the same bird. (as in many cases ) Should we then post our own nominated photos on this forum first then let the master be judge on which one to use? I plan to print and frame only if a photo of mine will surely be exhibited and will add value to the exhibit.

Hi Prop,
Here are my thoughts:
1. Yes, we should go ahead with the exhibit from Sept. 4 to Oct. 5 to maximize exposure. I think the UP exhibit can be held simultaneously with the WBCP birdfest at Palawan. It can be a complementary activity, as each will cater to a different audience and the venues are very far apart.
2. The PBP should come out with a brief flyer on the exhibit so the audience will have an idea what it's all about.
3. There might be an interest among the exhibit viewers to purchase some prints, so exhibitors should come out with some form of pricing. A certain % of the sale can go to PBP and/or UP.
4. I propose a weekly organizing meeting at UP (every Saturday perhaps) to be attended by all exhibitors, stakeholders and Prop. Jerry starting July 26 to iron out the details. We can perhaps assemble at Hardin in the morning, then have a brunch meeting after the birding.
5. The terms laid out so far look acceptable to me. Let's fine tune the exhibit title later so we can cover non-UP birds too.
Romy

Hi Ding, I suggest the decision to exhibit or not certain photos be left to the photographer. We have no set aesthetic standards..... some captures might not be too good technically, but if these are the only photos of the species so far, I think we should frame these. When we hold our first organizing meeting, I'll brief the group on the intricacies of printing (PP, resolution required, etc.). Romy
