I traded in my old 500 IS for the new 500 II lens. My impressions after a month is only positive. This new 500 is lighter much more hand hold able for me. I am 60. Also at F4 and 5.6 with the older 1.4. It is incredibly sharp. It is really a great lens. I have taken a few dozen pic's with it now and posted if interested they are at my flickr site. www.flickr.com/photos/avianphotosOddly enough I have also kept my old sigma 500 and sigma 300 2.8 lenses in Pentax mount. Two great lenses IMO.

I thought I would tell you I replaced the older Canon 300mm f2.8 IS with the new 300mm IS 11. And it is an unreal lens for me. Much better than the older 300 IS for me anyway. So Canon slammed that one out of the park. It really is much better than Sigma for sure. IS is amazing. So Canon wines for sure now. Anyway just a bit of trivial news.

Dropped my 7D an it affected my AF for the second time I have a chance to pick up a new 1d4 really cheap. 3,900 dollars after my vat rebate. On my way home next two weeks. I have only ever shot with the 7D and like it. Would you guys buy the new mark 1v or a new 7d. I want a second body. I currently have only the 7D. I looked at Mr. Ocon's review but he didn't give an opinion between the two. Which is best all around camera for birding? ?

Boy that really work's. Thanks for the tip. This site rocks. I have had my 7d for about 2 months now and had given up on it for high ISO shots. Just tried it on a speckled barwing. Marvelous

I bought a canon 300mm f2.8 is and have the sigma 300mm f2.8 lens in pentax mount. i thought i would give my opinion here. First the canon 300mm lens and 7-d is an excellent lens, but the K-5 in my opinion blows away the 7-d. In the jungle the 7-d is so noisy at high iso it is almost useless. Where the k-5 is just blowing and going with no problem. Second the lenses. This really thru me. The sigma 300mm f2.8 prime is just as sharp as the canon 300mm prime. The difference is not enough to talk about. The sigma prime is excellent. as is the canon. My partner here is using the pentax k-5 and i the 7-d. These pics were shot at the same time at the same distance. 7-d + canon300mm + 1.4 tc: www.flickr.com/photos/avianphotosthere is some motion blur here but a fairly good comparison. k-5 + sigma 300mm + 1.4 tc: www.flickr.com/photos/buripornchaiprasitI also own the sigma 500mm f4.5 lens and the canon 500mm f4l is lens. The sigma is a tad sharper than the 300mm lens. So i expect it to be in the same quality of pic as the canon. when i have the opportunity i will check. The canon mtf is total nonsence. But i think the sigma is right on spec. kinda strange i think. But in my opinion the sigma with pentax is almost as sharp as the canon. I think the canon edges it out in heavy crops. But with the size of the Canon vs. size of the Pentax and sigma. In the jungle i choose the pentax. Very easy to handle.

You know I do not have the foggest idea how to crop and process birds. I looked at some of you guys pics and I really like the cropping. I took these two birds yesterday. And I didn't crop so heavy. Where did you guys learn to crop? Silver Eared Mesia Pentax K-5 + 500mm f5.6 1/60 -.3 White Tailed Robin Pentax K-5 + 500mm f5.6 1/250 -.3

Very nice photos, that blue headed fantail has the same facial features as the Grey headed canary flycatcher here in thailand. Color different but the face is the same to my eyes. And bird size looks the same. just an observation..

Thanks for the tip Enrique. I have fits with the White ballence. I usually bring them up in raw and fix it before i post but i was in a hurry. It is so green in the jungle here it throws off my WB every time... Monitor calibrated? I use a cheap laptop. Was not aware there was such a thing.. LOL I am not much of a photographer but love birding. I have never tried birding in BKK. Never even been there except to pass thru. But have seen some great pics from the parks there. A friend and I found a species in Doi Ang Khan yesterday that had never been recorded there before. I took the local bird guy there on staff to see it and he photographed it and posted it on Thai birder. Today 1000KM from BKK there was a van from the local birding group there... LOL I saw them and left pretty quick.. But thought it was kinda funny. Boy the power of the internet? Awsome really. Rather common bird but uncommon up here. Orange Headed Thrush ( There is a tiny bit of shutter blur or bird movement in this pic saw it while processing ) Pentax K-5 + 500mm F-5.0 1/60 iso 1000

Thnk's Ely, Mick, Conrad, a great hobby. Ely I took these at Doi Ang Khan, I have been here for about 8 months now. This series was shot at a watering hole the birds visit. I was lucky to find it. Very peaceful and beautiful setting.
