How I wish I could encounter this bird here in Mindanao, I received reports that Philippine Pelican can be found in major lakes such as Lakes Lanao and Mainit and marshes in Agusan and Liguasan. Pretty shot and very rare! Congrats

Thanks Rey!
Mastah lucky for me it was breeding season, the male was wearing plumes, but generally males have brighter colors than females and males do usually have a distinct line at the side of the neck.

Thanks for that info Godo, if I have the luxury of time I will re-explore Liguasan Marsh. I was connected with a local group before contracting biodiversity studies for students doing wildlife research.

Godo and Ivan yes there were stories of these birds in the area based on my interview with the lumads in the area, although I had no personal encounters with these rare species. I had to look practically all sides of my body for crocodiles, mosquitoes, leaches, terrorists and looters. Sigh!

Sir Ed Agusan Marsh is located on the eastern side of Mindanao particularly in Agusan del Sur while Liguasan Marsh is located in Central Mindanao in Maguindanao-North Cotabato area. Yes these wetlands are connected in a way that both receive water from Bukidnon.
Liguasan Marsh is the sanctuary of not just wildlife but also terrorists. And yes it is one the strongholds of MILF and other lawless elements. But there is still a Philippine Marines station where you can observe birds because this is a vantage point offering a panoramic view of the marsh

I noticed that there were only two eggs in your picture. Eventually 3 chicks were hatched. It means to say that the bird was not frightened because she came back to lays more eggs and hatched them. Well done Elvin. Mabuhay. Sir Ely there were 3 eggs actually, I counted it myself after 3 hours of waiting for the mother to leave the nest. They all hatched but didn't have a record for them.

Looks like the nest is in such an open and unprotected spot.... congrats on the rare capture, Elvin! These birds were actually protected by armed men because this area was inside the fishpond owned by a prominent person in Zamboanga del Norte
