Thank you, Tateo-san. I hope to learn more on the features of the camera like how to shoot in RAW. I'm too lazy to read the user manual

Greetings my dear friends,
It's been ages since my last post in the forum. I am happy to see continued stream of photos from good friends and birding buddies.
As an aging birder, its a delight to "upgrade" to newer toys to satisfy cravings for feathered subjects.
The following photos of an Olive-backed Sunbird were taken using this extremely handy and light Canon SX60 HS. I think I have not given justice to the features of this camera with only a few clicks. However, the initial results were satisfactory for a beginner in my opinion albeit some traces of camera shake. I hope to improve as I familiarize and establish routines and techniques with this camera.
Happy Weekend everyone!! Olive-backed Sunbird [Cinnyris jugularis] Mactan Island, Cebu 03/11/2017

He Friends,
Just like in the past few weeks, this is one of those “light and short” birding sortie after lunch. However, the weather was acting up and shifting on and off from rainshowers to full sunshine. Since we are already onsite, I decided to relive the days of getting dirty with the waders.

Thank you, Romy. Yes, I always remember the Candaba trip where lunchtime is for sleeping This really makes birding interesting because there are many factors beyond our control. The payoff is huge if you get all the elements "just right" which is often the case.

Hello friends,
Here's another installment of the the images taken in our favorite birding place in Cebu.
This moorhen stayed motionless for sometime. However, the AF of the Canon 80D picked his feathers from foliage without any problem:

Thank you Romy, Sir Bobby, Tateo-san and Tina for appreciating the photos. I'm equally excited to try new ways of taking avian photos with the new toy

Hello Everyone,
It was really a hot day in Cebu last week and so Tateo and I decided go out for a drink. Of course we load our gears in the car and along the way decided to have "quickie" birding. We had so much fun that in about an hour I managed close to 2,000 images then we spend the rest of the afternoon "chimping" and sipping freshly brewed coffee in a cool place
We've been birding for many years and you can almost predict the presence of wildlife by just looking at the habitat. It was completely silent when we arrived but I wasn't long before I realized that we have some subjects hidden among the shrubs. We slowly moved back to give them space and let them recover their comfort zones. This eventually gave credence to the saying "The More You Give, the More You Will Receive" as we were rewarded with awesome display and views to take these photos:

Greater Painted-Snipe, female 05/08/2016 Canon 80D, 840mm, f/5.6, 1/1600Sec, ISO-800
Greater Painted-Snipe, male 05/08/2016 Canon 80D, 840mm, f/7.1, 1/800Sec, ISO-800
Greater Painted-Snipe, female 05/08/2016 Canon 80D, 840mm, f/5.6, 1/800Sec, ISO-800

Greater Painted-Snipe, female 05/08/2016 Canon 80D, 840mm, f/5.6, 1/640Sec, ISO-400
For many years, I'm used to manual focus override when confronted with scenarios like birds in foliage. I have learned to accept the limitation of my Canon 40D and compensate on areas where it matters.
This time however, I decided to let the Canon 80D's focusing algorithm figure out the subject including the critical focus points. In other words, this can be a DSLR "point and then shoot" scenario.
Please check the focus points as reflected in the following images:

Killer BIFs, Nilo! Love the buttery smooth "sapin-sapin" background of the first image. Looks like your new toy works very well with the 600 f4. I hope we can do a reunion at Olango with the Cebu gang on the next migration season. Hi Romy, I was thinking of the "sapin-sapin" BG as similar to the Cababa landscape as I remember it many years ago during the BIF sessions with you. This time the mini-island in Jugan in the middle provided the added layer. Just luck I guess and like what we always say... the more you do it, the luckier you will be in the field Looking forward to the reunion with the Cebu Birdnuts in Olango and in other areas as well.

Wow, BIF all the way! Hehehe. Seems like the AF of the 80D is really working for you my friend! Congrats! :-) Thank you Sir Bobby. I'm sure there are a lot of things to learn and try to this new toy Also there's a lot of reason to do something different... we'll discuss this in our sorties...

Thank you Tateo-san. Yes will do this again and maybe stay a bit longer in the area... perhaps a good brewed coffee will keep our eyes open for the occasional surprises

Hello Friends,
I've been out or travelling most of the time and was not able to bird in Cebu with my friends for sometime. In a short notice, three (3) of the six (6) Birdnuts of Cebu; Bobby K., Tateo O. and me converged in a shaded portion of the ponds as if to renew the old birding vow or drawn by the common desire for a birding fix.
It was also timely as I transitioned to the newly released Canon EOS 80D.
I've been using my Canon EOS 40D for almost 10 years now. Needless to say the technology have made photography a lot easier now that I dreaded the thought of the camera producing good photos than what the photographer have in mind. Because of this, I opted to shot in manual just to be sure
Anyway, coming from Canon EOS 40D, these are some of the features that warrants some testing for me:
1. Micro-Focus Adjustment (MFA) 2. The Canon 80D have 45 focus points (all cross type) vs 40D's 9 3. Cropping potential 24MP vs 10MP
These photos were taken around noontime under extreme lighting conditions. Despite the less than ideal shooting condition, I am happy to say that the 80D delivered as expected. I'm sure there are still a lot to learn for me and a good reason to bird with old friends in the field.
Jugan Fishponds, Cebu, Central Philippines 04/24/16 Note: All photos were taken in mid-day lighting and extremely cropped.

Wow, drooling over the 400mm 2.8L and the 1DMK2!! These and the other gears were tested and calibrated to perfection by no less than the master Philippine Bird Photographer... at a very friendly price...

I agree with the elongated toes... it makes it easier for these birds to negotiate this type of habitat. Thanks, Romy.

Hello everyone, This photo got my attention while checking on some photos which reminds me of my "naked" birding trip north of Cebu. "Naked" means I do not have binoculars or spotting scope while attending to about 35 first time birdwatchers. This reminds me that you don't have to use equipment to enjoy the outdoors. Of course in the between birdwatching sessions... I managed to take snapshots of the local avifauna including this Crake.
