My wife and I had a two-day birding trip to Taiwan. Because of the shortness of time, we just birded around the Taoyuan District where our hotel was located. Thanks to the help and generosity of our Taiwanese friends, Terrence Huang and Victor Yu, who took time off from their busy schedules to show us around, we were able to chalk up 13 lifers! Here are some of them: The star bird of Taiwan - Taiwan Blue Magpie Canon 5D Mk II, 100-400 @ 400mm, handheld ISO-1000, f7.1, 1/500 Quite common in parks - Grey Treepie Canon 5D Mk III, 300mm+1.4X (420mm), handheld ISO-1600, f7.1, 1/400 Another common bird (the equivalent of our YVB) - Light-vented Bulbul Canon 5D Mk III, 300mm+1.4X (420mm), handheld ISO-1250, f14, 1/2000 A very noisy bird and also common in parks - Taiwan Barbet Canon 5D Mk II, 100-400 @ 400mm, handheld ISO-1000, f8, 1/500 While having lunch at a garden restaurant, this endemic showed up, prompting me to grab the camera and run out to take a photo. - Taiwan Whistling Thrush Canon 5D Mk II, 100-400 @ 400mm, handheld ISO-1250, f10, 1/1000 Another common bird - Black Bulbul Canon 5D Mk III, 300mm+1.4X (420mm), handheld ISO-1250, f5.6, 1/200

Outstanding shots, Mark! Keep on shooting, especially now that the birds are back from wintering in southeast Asia.

Everytime a picture of the Ashy Thrush at the La Mesa Ecopark is posted, for most cases, it shows the bird on the ground or very close to it. So it was a surprise for me when this particular thrush flew to the branch of a MacArthur Palm and started eating the red fruits! Ashy Thrush ( Geokichla cinerea) La Mesa Ecopark January 27, 2014 Canon 5D Mark III, 500mm+1.4X (700mm) tripod ISO-3200, f7.1, 1/125, manual exposure, spot metering (it was just after sunrise and the place was still relatively dark)

You nailed it, Sylvia! It's really hard to get the "copper" throat of this sunbird.

I was with a group that included my wife, Peter Ting and four bird photographers from Hong Kong at Puerto Azul when several Brahminy Kites hovered above us . This particular one had a green plant in its talons which I didn't notice until I was already processing my shots. Minor post processing done: cropping, lightening and some sharpening. Brahminy Kite (Haliastur indus) Puerto Azul, February 22, 2014 Canon 5D Mk III, 500mm+1.4X (700mm) on a tripod ISO-400, f8, 1/500, spot metering

These are all great shots, Oca! I hope you don't mind if I make a little suggestion. I noticed that your shots have the subjects right in the middle of the frame. In bird photography the rule of thirds is usually applied, meaning the bird is placed on one third of the frame and the other two thirds is where the bird is facing.

Awesome shots, Doc! Couple of things though: it is Brown-throated Sunbird (split from Plain-throated) and it is Lovely Sunbird instead if Handsome (another split).

Thanks, Tina! The first three shots were rather easy because they were within the grounds of the hotel we stayed in (Sepilok Jungle Resort). The last four photos however involved some walking and even getting up three stories of narrow circular stairs to get to the canopy walkway in the Rainforest Discovery Center.
