Again, I meet an old friend, which I first captured in flight three years ago. The circumstances are similar - a sudden cloudburst rendered the wetlands very dark, as if dusk descended an hour earlier than it should. This silent predator comes out to hunt, and the heavens answer my prayers by briefly parting a portion of the clouds for some sunlight to filter through, giving me a few more photons to work with. Unlike in 2005 when I was shooting jpegs with a 20D + 400 5.6L, I'm better prepared this time. I'm ready with my 1DM2 plus a naked, extenderless 500 f4 IS, primed to shoot in RAW and with pre-metered manual exposure settings. This time I like his photo better. ;D Australasian Grass-Owl ( Tyto longimembris) Candaba wetlands, May 27, 2008 1DM2 + 500 f4 IS, 1/500 sec, f/4, ISO 800, IS off, manual exposure in available light, 475B/3421 support, near full frame:

Awesome capture Mastah Romy. I like the subdued colors and the fantastic wing blurr, great exposure in low light.

Thanks, folks. Yesterday's visit to Candaba was on a different site, as the big pond is no longer accessible by any vehicle. Leny M. hied over to my birding spot to keep me company for a while and swap birding tales. ;D Here's one waterbird seldomly captured in flight, also taken yesterday. Great shots! The owl seems to be staring at you, wondering what you are doing.

Great shots! The owl seems to be staring at you, wondering what you are doing. These guys do stare at you, William! They're a curious lot, and sometimes they fly back to take a good look at the creature pointing a long tube at them! ;D

Thanks again, folks. Here's the same Owl 5 frames earlier than the first posted above. I used the same WB value as above and lighting is similar, but it's interesting to see the varying hue of the background as the direction of light changes. And I thought Grass-Owls all look identical ..... ;D The first two shots I posted were of the same individual..... just noticed that I also got the second fellow. Note the more elongated face and whiter underparts of the second owl. 1DM2 + 500 f4 IS, 1/400 sec, f/4, ISO 800, IS off, manual exposure in available light, 475B/3421 support Australasian Grass-Owl ( Tyto longimembris) Candaba wetlands, May 27, 2008 1DM2 + 500 f4 IS, 1/500 sec, f/4, ISO 800, IS off, manual exposure in available light, 475B/3421 support, near full frame:
