After spending more than a week at the San Gerardo de Dota area, Ariel brought me to the Carara/Tarcoles region. This is where I saw the famous Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao) 35 inches (90 cm). They are huge and very red, my favorite color. These pictures were taken at a distance of 46.4 meters and I was quite pleased that the image of the birds were still acceptable. Canon EOS 1D Mark IV, Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM with Canon Extender 2X II. Gitzo GT3530LS tripod, Wimberley WH200 head. Manual exposure in available light. These are the most romantic birds that I have seen. Most of the time you see them in pairs. 1/1250 sec., f/5.6, ISO 1600 They would fly together, eat together, and play together. 1/1250 sec., f/5.6, ISO 1600 They would even preen each others feathers. 1/800 sec., f/5.6, ISO 1600 Even if I was far away they still took a glance at me. 1/1000 sec., f/5.6, ISO 1600 Playfully horsing around with each other and providing some entertainment. 1/1000 sec., f/5.6, ISO 1600

Knowing that these birds are very popular at Tarcoles, it was like a head start to have seen them right away even if they were of 46.4 meters from me. Subsequently I did see them a lot closer. They feed on the Bromeliads that grows on the branches of the tree. Nature has its own way of propagation and balancing the environment. These birds are boisterous and noisy so it will easily catch your attention.
