Great Photo Sir Ely! Congratulations Thank you Godo. It was the Frogmouth that you photograph that got me to introduce myself to you. In my mind your Frogmouth with its funny face gave me the desire to photograph this bird and it took me more than two years to finally come across not one but two of them in different locations. Cheers to you Godo & Mabuhay.

There are times that it gets to be very difficult to take a picture of a bird. This pair of Philippine Frogmouth (Batrachostomus septimus) 9 inches, was 90 degrees straight up and I have to shorten one of the legs of the tripod so that the camera can be pointed at them. Than I had to sit on the ground that was still wet because of the morning dew, tighten the vertical and horizontal adjustments, and squeeze the shutter as gently as possible so that there will not be any shake. It was dark and I took this picture at 1/15 sec., f/5.6, ISO 1600. The result was surprisingly good and we were all happy about it as it is rare to see a pair of Frogmouth together. One of my favorite pictures of the Frogmouth because of the rarity to see a pair together. Some friends have remarked that the Frogmouth looks so ugly. As for me they are uniquely beautiful. I am delighted to have this picture.

Thank you William. Having the desire to see this bird for a long time and finally being able to photograph it, gives me a great feeling of fulfillment. Although I had plan to go to Bohol when sightings of this bird was reported, I missed the first pair because the hatchling has fledged. But I thank God for giving me the chance to see & photograph the second hatchling in another location. It was a big thrill for me to see these unusual looking birds.

It has been raining off and on for the past two weeks and I found this bird in my file just in time for the article that I am preparing for i-mag photography magazine. This will be my fourth article since the beginning of the year. They come out every 45-60 days except for a time when the printing press they were using broke down. It will be about birding in Bohol and this will be my longest article to date. I hope that the publisher will not cut it down because it is about Bohol and the tourist sites with pictures of some of the best Philippine birds that one can see there. This picture was taken when it was drizzling in the morning and even if the bird got wet he still looks like the grumpy sleepy bird but with a smile. Philippine Frogmouth (Rufous morph) 1/160 sec., f/5.6, ISO 1600

Awesome photos Ely ! I like it that you are now showing the environment where the photos were taken. Makes one appreciate the photos more. Kawawa naman the guide. Sana holding hands nalang kayo when you crossed the river ;-D Like the other birders ;-D HEhEhehEHe That was the feedback that I got from other viewers. They wanted to know what is happening and suggested that I take pictures of the habitat and other points of interest. So now, not only do they appreciate it better but they get to be at the scene. Holding hands may be too intimate. I think hugging is better especially when you have to hang on for the sake of staying dry. LOL. Don't worry about the guide as he was having fun as much as I did. Look at the smile on his face. He is a good man and if ever you go there, get him even just to carry your gear so he can earn a little extra. Thank you Tina.

Thank you Nelson. These pictures were taken May of 2012. The Philippine Frogmouth in that area is now rarely seen. With the earthquake and typhoons that hit Bohol this year, Bohol suffered extensive damages and I don't know how birding is now in that area.
