Every morning, Carlos the bird guide of Dantica Hotel would bring a group of Tourist to see the Resplendent Quetzal at the nesting site near the fish ponds where they raise rainbow trout. Fresh mountain water would continuously feed water into the pond and nourish the fish with fresh oxygen. The fish are fed 6 times a day and certainly a good fish to eat. He was back early that day and he informed me that he was available to show me some birds. It was a good day as we saw several species, and one of them was the Emerald Toucanet (Aulacorhynchus prasinus). From a distance we saw her enter the hole of the nest and waited. After half an hour she did come out and here is the series of pictures that I was able to take. I consider myself fortunate to have been able to see this bird because not everybody who went there had a chance to see it in spite of it having a nest in a hole of a dead tree. Canon EOS 1D Mark IV, Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM with Canon Extender 2X II. Gitzo GT3530LS tripod, Wimberley WH200 head. Manual exposure in available light. All pictures taken at 1.400 sec., f/5.6, ISO 400 at a distance of 11.3 meters.

Wonderful documentations and very sharp pictures! I didn't see these when you were here! Looking forward for more surprises! Thank you Ariel. This was on a weekday and you were busy at work so you were not with me at that time. I am still choosing and consolidating the pictures of the time I was at San Gerardo de Dota and it looks like I will be posting pictures from there for months to come. Costa Rica has a large variety of birds. Now that I am going thru what I have taken while I was there, I realize that with the thousands of pictures that I have taken there are several hundreds that are keepers.

Thank you Ramon. Now that I am going thru the pictures that I have taken I realize that there is a slim chance of ever finding a place as wonderful as Costa Rica when it comes to abundance and variety of birds. My appreciation and gratitude goes to Ariel and his family for making this trip the best birding trip I ever had.
