Wow! Sawasdee Krup! these are superb shots, Gary! With majority of us shooting Canon and Nikon, it's nice to see great photos from Pentax! Looks like Pentax handles Hi-ISO noise quite well or was some noise reduction done on post processing? none the less these are excellent captures.

Thnk's Neon, PP I denoised the background only. Birds have not been touched. Pentax K-5 is the best camera I have ever used. AF is much better than my old K-x. Actually I was happy with the K-x a 500 dollar camera. I'm easy to please..
If any body reading this has any Pentax FA* lenses they want to sell I might be interested. Send me a message.
Thanks

Thnk's Ely, Mick, Conrad, a great hobby. Ely I took these at Doi Ang Khan, I have been here for about 8 months now. This series was shot at a watering hole the birds visit. I was lucky to find it. Very peaceful and beautiful setting.

Gary, I missed these birds when I was in Thailand. There are several good areas to bird, even in Bangkok. Great shots, good details - perhaps the crops are a bit too tight? Also, is your monitor calibrated? The white balance seems off.

Thanks for the tip Enrique. I have fits with the White ballence. I usually bring them up in raw and fix it before i post but i was in a hurry. It is so green in the jungle here it throws off my WB every time... Monitor calibrated? I use a cheap laptop. Was not aware there was such a thing.. LOL I am not much of a photographer but love birding. I have never tried birding in BKK. Never even been there except to pass thru. But have seen some great pics from the parks there. A friend and I found a species in Doi Ang Khan yesterday that had never been recorded there before. I took the local bird guy there on staff to see it and he photographed it and posted it on Thai birder. Today 1000KM from BKK there was a van from the local birding group there... LOL I saw them and left pretty quick.. But thought it was kinda funny. Boy the power of the internet? Awsome really. Rather common bird but uncommon up here. Orange Headed Thrush ( There is a tiny bit of shutter blur or bird movement in this pic saw it while processing ) Pentax K-5 + 500mm F-5.0 1/60 iso 1000

You know I do not have the foggest idea how to crop and process birds. I looked at some of you guys pics and I really like the cropping. I took these two birds yesterday. And I didn't crop so heavy. Where did you guys learn to crop? Silver Eared Mesia Pentax K-5 + 500mm f5.6 1/60 -.3 White Tailed Robin Pentax K-5 + 500mm f5.6 1/250 -.3

Below are some of the ideas and tips I've learned from the masters in cropping bird pictures. Try following them and see if your new cropping pleases you.
1. Give some space for the bird to fly, walk or run to... The space in front or on top of the bird's gaze should be longer or more spacious than the opposite space.
2. Follow the rule of thirds... Google this concept and you'll find amazing explanations from the masters.
3. The bird should not be too big as if it is being choked by the frame, not too little to wallow in enormous space, unless you want to present a macro or an environment shot.
These are just some of the basic concepts that I learned from the masters. I always put these things in my mind whenever I crop.
I hope this helps.

Thanks Alain. I will look into the thirds rule. Taking a photo and framing it are two different things altogeather..

Nice shots, Gary! Yes, composition is another aspect of photography. I'm sure you'll get the hang of it in no time. As for the white balance - the best thing to do is buy or rent a hardware-based monitor calibrator (a few of us use the Spyder2 by ColorVision) to have a consistent color set.

Congrats! Wow, I bought mine years ago and it cost much more than that! Also, check if the central area of the calibrator is clear - a colleague of mine was getting ugly casts after he calibrated with his office's Spyder2. He borrowed mine and got the correct colors. It turned out that there was some fungus growing on the plastic surface of his calibrator. Looking forward to more of your photos! - E
