Hi guys,
I find binocular heavy on a trek during birding with our heavy lens set up. Is small monocular optics practical for spotting small birds. 8x or 10x ?
Can any one share some advise or experience with regards to pro / cons and brand / model for low light.
Thanks ...

hi dr. boymac,
i would still suggest compact binoculars, 8 x 25 will do. for low light conditions, you can try the compact bins by swarovski.

When birding, I seldom bring my 12x50 binos now. When I need to magnify a distant object, I just look through the viewfinder with the 500 f4 + 1.4x mounted. BTW Boy, please resize your avatar to a maximum of 200x200 pixels so the layout of our pages won't be affected.

I would like to see the bird how it pose before I release the shutter. He he he he. 200 x 200 pixel noted .... Thanks ...

Yup, MLU is the only method that works with the 1D4 at shutter speeds slower than 1/50 sec. This is because of the 1D4's peculiarly strong shutter slap when shooting in Live View. In all other EOS DSLRs, you can shoot at slower than 1/50 sec in LV with sharp results.

I notice that too if I go below 1/50 sec. Thanks for the confirmation
