It's good to see your birding photos again Tina. The pain of carrying the setup may actually be proportional to the satisfaction of its overall output.
Keep shooting and thanks for sharing.

Ah yes, the output. Hehehe. 'Tis true - but no pain, no gain, should be for weight watchers. :-) Osawa's 300mm precipitated my left hand's gout and now it hurts just to look at that lens. Tina, if you're really serious about the weight issue, as I am, the 400mm f5.6L is still the best alternative by far. Believe you me, if it were not for the light weight of this lens, I would have given up bird photography already - the pain is just not worth it anymore. I also have the Sigma 150-500 OS, which is far lighter but much slower, than the Canon, but at least I can still hand-hold the thing every now and then. So, my advice, sell that 500 and get the 400. You'll enjoy birding more, and be more motivated to go out and shoot! :-)

Wow super hornbill pic! Love it.
Great set with the signature Tina look.
Tina, Sylvia also has a hard time with weight. Heck, even I have a hard time carrying my rig around. Its really a good idea to look for ways to save weight to make birding more fun.
The first place to save weight can be your gimbal. Its 3.5 pounds. Sylvia uses a Markins M10 for her 7D + 1.4xtc+300mm f2.8, it only weighs 1.1 pounds.
Saving 2.4 pounds almost the difference between a 300 f2.8 and a 500 f4. For the 500 f4 Markins specs the M20 only .1 pound more.
They have a dealer in Singapore. You can ask JP to get you one. Try Sylvia's first. I feel the difference in the weight of our tripods, I am still using the 393.

Nice to see your avian photos again, Tina. Yes, the EF500 is heavy, the 300 f2.8 with 2x TC is the best compromise IMHO.
