A business trip to La Union brought me yesterday within striking distance of this interesting town of Pangasinan, where a restaurant built over a fishpond serves the best grilled catfish I've tasted so far. The bigger reason though for my visit wasn't the tasty catfish, nor the little fat crabs and juicy oysters. I've discovered a few years back that this is one spot where a few Brahminy Kites linger for hours feeding on the contents of the fishponds. Of the 5 or 6 times that I've been there, the raptors always showed themselves. I talked to the local folks and they confimed the daily visit by the Kites. So, in between bites of good food, I shot bursts at the Kites, and at anything that flew within range. I used two combos - the hand held 5D2 + 100-400 IS when the birds got very close, and the tripod-mounted 7D + 400 2.8 IS + 1.4x when the birds were farther out. Brahminy Kite ( Haliastur indus, resident) Shooting info - Binmaley, Pangasinan, April 22, 2010, 5D2 + 100-400 IS, 400 mm, f/5.6, ISO 400, 1/2000 sec, hand held, manual exposure in available light, major crop, 30.30 m distance, GPS Latitude = 16°00'56.69", GPS Longitude = 120°15'15.48". Shooting info - Binmaley, Pangasinan, April 22, 2010, 7D + 400 2.8 IS + 1.4x TC, 560 mm, f/5.6, ISO 400, 1/2000 sec, 475B/3421 support, manual exposure in available light, near full frame, 28.7 m distance, GPS Latitude = 16°00'56.69", GPS Longitude = 120°15'15.48". Shooting info - Binmaley, Pangasinan, April 22, 2010, 5D2 + 100-400 IS, 400 mm, f/5.6, ISO 400, 1/2000 sec, hand held, manual exposure in available light, near full frame, 18.1 m distance, GPS Latitude = 16°00'56.69", GPS Longitude = 120°15'15.48".

Thanks, guys! Those are wonderful shots. I don't expect to be able to do what you just did but I sure would like to try. Beautiful captures. Well done Romy. Mabuhay. The nice thing about this place Ely is you have a guaranteed consolation prize if you miss the flying and diving BKs - great food! Their inihaw na hito is great as mentioned, but the adobong talaba is unbelievable - the sourness of the vinegar and the spices are not overwhelming, and the oysters are cooked just right (enough boiling to hopefully make it safe for eating, but not so well done that it will become rubber-like). The halabos na talangka are full of fat, and heavenly when dipped in vinegar. Hehehe, I'm getting hungry already just typing this. Let me go and raid the ref for a couple of minutes. ;D

Thanks, Edu and JV! Darn.. I guess the next time I visit Pangasinan/Dagupan on a business trip and 'I just happened to have my gear with me'.. Matutina's will have to wait. The food is very similar to Matutina's, Edu.... just cheaper in the BK place I think. Hmmmm..... looks like the 5D2 + 100-400 is over-represented in my BIF thread. Let me post another one from the 7D + 400 2.8 to balance things out. ;D Shooting info - Binmaley, Pangasinan, April 22, 2010, 7D + 400 2.8 IS + 1.4x TC, 560 mm, f/5.6, ISO 400, 1/2500 sec, 475B/3421 support, manual exposure in available light, near full frame, 28.7 m distance, GPS Latitude = 16°00'56.69", GPS Longitude = 120°15'15.48".

Makes me wonder if the kites kept hovering to see what pond delicacies Ka Mastah is feasting on or if they were more interested in having photos of them taken. In masterful fashion. Amazing work as always, Ka Mastah!

The first 3 photos are superb until you posted a fourth one!!! You really have a way of setting up the awe in us Ka Mastah! I've always bypassed this sleepy town of Binmaley on my way to Dagupan and I've always had lunch in Silverio's or Dawol?
Next time, I will surely check out what they have in this town.
Oh... by the way, did I mention that Binmaley is the hometown of my mother in law? Maybe I should really make it a point to say hello to the uncles and aunts next time. (and i just happen to have my gear with me... if that's over used, I'd ask my wife if she feels like visiting the lovely town of her mom's roots... ehem, ehem... sir Neon...)

I am convinced. I am going there number one for the Brahminy Kites and number 1 for the delicious food.

Thanks again, folks.... nice to see you around Plain Idol! I am convinced. I am going there number one for the Brahminy Kites and number 1 for the delicious food. Ely, make sure you have a lot of CF cards and your batteries are fully charged. BIF shooting especially with 10 fps 1D4 bursts can add up to thousands of RAW files in just two hours. ;D Aside from Kites and Terns, some other water birds also pass by the catfish place, and here's one. Little Egret ( Egretta garzetta, migrant) Shooting info - Binmaley, Pangasinan, April 22, 2010, 7D + 400 2.8 IS + 1.4x TC, 560 mm, f/5.6, ISO 400, 1/4000 sec, 475B/3421 support, manual exposure in available light, near full frame, 28.7 m distance, GPS Latitude = 16°00'56.69", GPS Longitude = 120°15'15.48".

The latter pictures that you are posting are better than the first 3. Not that they are bad, they are all very good but the fourth one where you use the 400mm f2.8 is really the kind of picture that I would like to take. I don't usually take pictures of Little Egrets but after seeing how beautiful it can be I will give it a try if I see one. I still need a lot of practice in BIF so don't expect anything from me. I am going there to try my best but that is about it. As you said there is still the consolation of the good food if I missed the birds. I will go there fully armed with battery and cf cards so that I have no excuses to make. Thank you Romy and wish me luck, it might help. Heh heh heh.
