Hello to you all! I stumbled upon this site just today, and its really so exciting to have found a group of people who love photographing birds:) Here in Australia, we have the birding-australia email list. Its ok, but not really photography orientated. And you know how email lists are.
I've been viewing Romy's work at pbase , and I'm still so breath-taken by the captures ( especially of the shy Kingfishers!!) . Not wanting to embarrass you, Romy, but I am also so impressed by your wonderful, sharing attitude and humble (and funny) personality. I have learned so much from you in so short amount of time, and I am so grateful to you, for the information you share with us.
I'm looking forward to chatting here on the forum!

Hello Bindi and "mabuhay!". "Ikinagagalak ka naming makasama dito sa aming grupo." (We are pleased to have you in our group.) Bindi, hope you don't mind my asking and it's a far off thing but are you by chance "Bindi"... the daughter of the late Steve Irwin?

Hello!!!!!
Crikey! No, Sadly I'm no relation to Steve, and Come to think of it, if I were his girl I'd be 5 years old or something? lol:) `Bindi' is short for `Belinda' ; its my friends/ family Nick name.
Does `Mabuhay ka' mean welcome? Or something else? (i hope it does not mean `newbie' hehe:)
Today I am trawling ebay for a 100-400mm L , which is so frustrating. I saw one for $1000 US, allegedly a sharp copy. But I was not able to bid on an US auction, and it went within the hour. I'm scared of getting addicted to watching ebay for deals instead of my photography, lol.
Its so nice to meet you all!

Welcome to the group Bindi Yeheyyyyyyyy another lady bird photographer !!!!! You are so lucky to have found Romy's pbase site - knowing Romy has been such a blessing to all of us. He has been our inspiration to take better bird photos and like Nestor said - a walking encyclopedia when it comes to bird photography and so willing to teach all those who are interested to learn. Hope to see some of your captures soon.

Hi Bindi, Welcome to the happy world of birdnuts . And I cheer with Tina, (our top lady bird photographer as you will see), that our number is increasing in a male populated PBP group. Do you mind if I ask where you are in Aus.? I have a daughter in Victoria and had the chance to hear the lovely sound of the bell birds in her neighborhood, though I did not seen them. Looking forward to your posts. Lydia

Dear csmallari and Lydia,
I always enjoy meeting other lady photographers!!! I know a few now in Australia, and I have a theory now, that our maternal instinct works in our favour with bird photography:) My best shots so far are from winning the trust/curiosity of the bird, rather than treating it like a hunted animal. But its only because the character of the birds is what I like most, and that can take some time to see:)

Hello Mate!! Welcome to the group Bindi!! Just to let you know that you are not alone in photographing OZ birds. ;D I'm currently incarcerated here in Darwin. I'll be paroled by next week. I might be able to do some birding near the Darwin airport and possibly also in Perth. Here is the link to my OZ birds collection. Cheers, Neon

Welcome aboard, Bindi. I'm so happy that this forum is now getting an international flavor. We have somebody from Japan, and now you in Australia.
Romy is our idol and mentor and I'm sure you will learn a lot from him.

Good morning to you neon, and tenderstorm!
Its nice to meet you, and thanks for saying hello:)
Wow, Neon; those photos are spectacular. You are a very fine photographer! The lighting in all your bird pics is wonderfully chosen. I love Australian finches and it looks like you managed to capture pics of the most spectacular ones. Darwin must be nice!
I live in SE QLD, which is close to fraser Island, were I love to spend time birding. Did you know theres a birding week there in May, hosted by Raoul Slater and Daren Leal?
I just noticed you use the 300mm F/4 L prime too. I am buying a teleconvertor for mine and I'd be grateful for any suggestions.
Cheers B

Not only that we shoot oz birds, we have the same lens!! ;D I've been using both the 1.4x Kenko Teleplus Pro and 2x Kenko Teleplus MC7. Both of them can AF on my 30D and 40D + 300mm f4 IS. The Kenko 1.4x is recognized by both cameras so it registers the right EXIF data whereas the 2x is not, so you just multiply all the EXIF data by 2. The oz bird collection was shot using either of these setups. Cheers,

Hi Neon! Are you really in the Darwin jail? hehe:) Thanks so much for the information!. I find it so hard finding pics of the 300mm f/4 IS L/ Kenko Pro TC combination. I think yours is the first! If you are interested, I found this stunning Kingfisher gallery at pbase, by someone who uses the 20D, 300mm f/4 IS and the 300mm F/2.8 L lenses with canon TC's. Its truly inspiring!! www.pbase.com/allonkira/image/67620519

Hi Neon! Are you really in the Darwin jail? hehe:) Hello Bindi, I can say more or less, yes! to your question!! ;D it's a maximum security installation in the middle of the Timor Sea. The only way in and out is about 2 hrs by helicopter and 24 hrs by boat from Darwin. I'm towards the end of my sentence and would be able to treat my withdrawal symptoms (itchy shutter finger, shaking hands, high pulse rate and increased perspiration when seeing birds) in Darwin and Perth. And, would have calmed down a little bit already when I go to UP or Candaba for a much need fix. Cheers, Neon

Wow Neon, that looks like a scarey place to be during a storm! Or perhaps exciting? You are a very versatile person, living out there.
