Miss this forum for a couple of weeks. I pushed through with my RORO trip with my kumander-in-chief to Negros and went home in Victorias. Schedule was too tight I wasn't able to join Alain and Godo in the Dumaguete birding sortie. However, I managed to squeeze in a few hours of birding just around my hometown and was quite amazed at the variety of species in our area. Most are just a few minutes walk away from our house. Here are some. Yellow Wagtail, Victorias, Negros Occidental Canon 50D, EF 400mm f5.6L Shot @ f5.6, 1/500, ISO320, 70% pixels wasted, Handheld Oriental SkyLark, Victorias, Negros Occidental Canon 50D, EF 400mm f5.6L Shot @ f5.6, 1/640, ISO320, 70% pixels wasted, Handheld Asian Golden Plover Canon 50D, EF 400mm f5.6L, Manfrotto 755XB/Gimbal, 1x2 pounds "rice" bag Shot @ f7.1, 1/1250", ISO320, 70% pixels wasted Pond Heron (Javan or Chinese?) Canon 50D, EF 400mm f5.6L, Manfrotto 755XB/Gimbal, 1x2 pounds "rice" bag Shot @ f5.6, 1/640", ISO320, 70% pixels wasted Little Egret Canon 50D, EF 400mm f5.6L, Car Window as Support, 1x2 pounds "rice" bag Shot @ f5.6, 1/2000", ISO320, 50% pixels wasted White-vented Whistler (Thanks to Steve for the ID) Canon 50D, EF 400mm f5.6L, Handheld, 1x2 pounds "rice" bag Shot @ f5.6, 1/100", ISO320, 50% pixels wasted I hope to find time to PP the other birds

You mentioned you were walking? By the angle of these shots I would guess you were crawling hehe.
All are great shots and these are great "pasalubong" shots to fellow birdnuts!

Nice set Glenn, the Pond Heron with the good exposure and melted green BG is my favorite among the bunch.

The wagtail is Motacilla flava. If I have more time I will try to race and sex it, but have to consult books.
Nothing wrong with the Lark. Alauda gulgula, and that is what it looks like. The only confusion species in Phils is Mirafra javanica, and it has a thicker, cone-like bill, and the primary extension along the rectrices is shorter than in this bird (defn: primary extension means that you imagine where the top of the base of the tail starts, and you look at how far past that point the primary flight feathers extend along the rectrices (i.e., the tail feathers), when the wing in folded at rest.

Excellent set Bro! like the low angle shots Thanks bro! Sama ka na next time Whoa, there you are, bro! Your low angle shots are great! Thanks! Let us go back! You mentioned you were walking? By the angle of these shots I would guess you were crawling hehe. Thanks! I was forced to lie flat on my stomach and crawl becuase the birds there are so hard to approach. They really keep a good distance. They only allowed to be approached if you crawl haha. This is probably the result of bird hunting in negros. When I left the area, I had crossed path with three bird hunters preparing to comb the area. I was hoping to get to chat with them but thought it wont be the best time and place to do that. Nice set Glenn, the Pond Heron with the good exposure and melted green BG is my favorite among the bunch. Thanks Rey! Any idea if its a Chinese or Javan? Now I know why you have been so silent. Looks like you had a good vacation. Now comes the catching up with the work. In life nothing comes free so enjoy it to the fullest. I like the Pond Heron. Well done Toto. Mabuhay. Thanks Sir Ely! I was off the grid for more than a week! wireless Internet is so slow I had the hardest time opening this site Homecourt (or hometown) advantage, as they say. ;D What a harvest, Toto. Please post the others, too! Tnx Mark! I think I saw a really good birding site in your hometown I dunno the place but I have marked it in my gps. The wagtail is Motacilla flava. If I have more time I will try to race and sex it, but have to consult books. Nothing wrong with the Lark. Alauda gulgula, and that is what it looks like. Thanks Steve! Will wait for your further comments Nice set Toto. I have relatives there in Victorias, might visit them soon. hehehe I like the Pond Heron too. Thanks Jun. Who knows, I happen to know your relatives. Just in case you go there, pm me so I can tell them where to bring you

I grew up in a place like Victorias. I was born in Canlubang, behind our house was the sugar mill. My father dealt with a Gamboa. I always heard his name in conversations. I have been to Victorias once, very nostalgic. Hunters... aaargh, I should inform Josef Sagemuller about his "friends" . Oh how I wish that these gun wielders will change to the kind of shooting gears we use. lyd

I guess PBPF should do some photo exhibits in negros and invite the hunters so they get introduced to our brand of 'weapon'

Excellent idea! Why not, Toto? Canon can sponsor. I remember the Events Manager of SM Bacolod who is a close friend, would like to do a bird festival of some sorts. The hunters will surely come even without invitation from us... the ads will lure them to come. We can highlight the photos of former hunters and their testimonies in the papers why they stopped. telyds

Am sure hunters will flock and come in droves.
