A colleague told me there was a bird that bumped into a glass wall in their building and was being taken care of by the guard. I decided to check the bird and to my surprise (and utmost delight), it was a Hodded Pitta! The bird was tied on one leg and at times tried to fly away, showing signs of recovery from the collision. The guard tied it as one of the employees told him she's taking the bird home.I informed a couple of birdnuts and talked to the guard to have the bird released immediately (at Prof. Jerry's advice). Bert came in to the scene in record time and we freed our avian friend. Of course, we had to take a photo! ;D Thankfully, it flew and perched on a nearby branch and so we started taking positions. I didn't have my gear so I had to borrow Bert's so I can also shoot. Thanks, Bert! Here's a quickly-PP'd shot: Hooded Pitta ( Pitta sordida) UP Diliman, Quezon City, 10 Dec 2009 [All gear are Bert's, including CF card ;D] 40D + Bigmos (Sigma 150-500 OS), 370mm, ISO 200, f/8, 0.5s, manual exposure, manual focus via LiveView, tripod/gimbal support, cable release, processed full-frame capture, office attire ;D

You did all of us a favor. Feeding the bird, getting it released, and taking a beautiful picture of the Hooded Pitta. Well done Mark. Mabuhay.

Great capture Mark! But equally great is the fact that you're able to release it again to its natural habitat!

Congrats and good job on releasing the bird. Question, is it a hooded Pitta or an Azure-Breasted one. I looked for pictures of a Hooded Pitta yesterday when Bert texted just so I would know what to look for just in case I had time to check it out in UP. What I saw has a brown cap and white spots on the wings. I showed the picture to Bert this morning and he too is not sure.
Is it possible you got the first record of an Azure-Breasted Pitta in UPD?

Thanks Ely, Rey, Neon, Den, Bong, Tonji, Toto, TeLyds, Bob, Gabs, Ka Mastah, and Edu. I looked for it early this morning and this lunch but I could no longer find it. Hope it survived (and perhaps return). @rey: Yes it was very close. A few steps forward and you'd be able to touch the bird. @gabs: I'm not an expert, but I'm confident this is a Hodded Pitta. Here is a photo of the Azure-breasted Pitta: www.arkive.org/azure-breasted-pitta/pitta-steerii/

Thank you Gabs, Doc Chito, and Bong.
@doc Chito I'm sure you have excellent captures of this bird.
@bong AFAIK, the bird isn't endemic to the place (or to the Philippines).
